We have a deprecated slack group for pycroscopy that we disbanded for the following reasons in favor of a public forum like google groups:
1. The free version of Slack has a memory limit of 10,000 messages and we quickly went over the limit in the matter of a few months. As a consequence, we could find older messages.
2. Many people didn’t want to deal with a dedicated messaging software, logging in, remembering a password, etc. - slack
3. Everyone needs an invite to slack whereas you don’t need an invite for the google group(s)
4. It is a little challenging to keep track of several threads of conversation on slack
5. Most importantly, we want all the knowledge to be publicly available (via google searches) instead of being trapped within slack. We found that people were asking similar questions and we were unable to point them towards the answer we had already given due to reasons #1 and #4

Yeah, I remember when you posted all that. It's just the same difference between old-fashioned e-mail versus using a messenger. I guess considering the traffic here is low then using Google Groups as sort of "Stack Exchange for Pycroscopy/PyUSID" seems fine.

It's a lot easier to have a conversation on something like Slack, since it's a messenging tool-- during debugging last year, I used the Slack group quite a bit, and if I was forced to use Google Groups and wait for whenever someone replied hours later I'd have abandoned that and just moved on to any of the other projects I'm involved in. Jess told me she has emailed you here and there for random things regarding Pycroscopy-- that's the usage case Slack replaces.

We understand the sentiment behind an IM platform. You are always welcome to continue using the slack group if you prefer that to google groups. Please contact us if you are having trouble joining the pycroscopy slack group.
