Hi All,

I write to try to save a client the cost of flying me cross-country to examine a work of art using pXRF.  Please contact me if you own pXRF instrumentation and work in the LA or wider California area.

All the best,

Jamie

Folks I need to clear up some things relative art analysis and pxrf

Please note very carefully the following

the Tracer system is, it actually more advanced than any bench top or full laboratory xrf system it just looks like a pxrf.

So the capability pecking order in the world of energy dispersive xrf  is:

1.       the PXRF systems like the Titan by Bruker, the Delta by Olympus, Goldd+ by Niton  and Skyray and Oxford Xmet. These are basically xrf survey instruments and generally useless for anything but modern alloy analysis or very uniform prepared materials,  despite what all the vendors claim, including Bruker! The probability of getting the correct elemental presence or content in ppm answer from one of these on a elementally complex materials ie (oil paintings) with some non-uniformity is ZERO

2.       then there are the lab systems which come with operating parameters very confined by the vendors and you must do sample preparation

3.       and then there is the Tracer system which is the most sensitive, accurate and sensitive xrf system on the planet and will do everything the other 2 groups will do times 10, see attached! And using the Artax software on raw spectrum with Bayesian technics give you very accurate elemental presence and absence and relative amounts one location to another

I hope this helps clarify what the vendors have made very complex and is very simple.

Thanks

Bruce

Hi All,

I write to share with you my first field use of accessories for the Manfrotto tripod that shipped with my Tracer SD-III. The accessories include a $55 tripod dolly with lockable wheels and a $39 Tripad workspace (links below).

Hi All,

I write with an illustrated tip to help align the Tracer for analysis of a small area.

The large attached image shows a black plastic clip that came with the Tracer's Manfrotto tripod. Inserted into (a pre-existing hole centered on) the black clip is a green foam ear protector, which serves as a highly visible (and soft) pointer. The black plastic clip just happens to grab indentations in the Tracer SD-III's nosepiece.

When the Tracer is mounted to a geared tripod column or extension arm, to facilitate reproducible movement along an axis -- one can -- carefully:

(1) using the gear mechanism, move the Tracer to position the foam pointer at a spot of interest
(2) using the gear mechanism, move the Tracer away from the object or surface
(3) remove the black clip pointer
(4) using the gear mechanism, move the Tracer to the aligned location for analysis

All the best,

Jamie
