Hi everyone,

I am trying to collect data  with our Tracer 5i using Artax via the USB cable but I am having some trouble. I logged into the Tracer using "Supervisor" mode and went into the "Connections" menu of "System Setup". I saw that the USB connection is no longer enabled, but I cannot seem to enable it.  The USB option is grayed out. I can enable the bluetooth and wifi connection option but not USB. Does anyone know how to make the USB connection "enable" option active so I can select it?  I am sure there is a totally obvious step to do this that I am completely missing.

Thank you!

best,
Vanessa

Well i am not sure ( in the past i had the same issue after using wirelessly the tracer) but i suppose that you should plug in your Tracer to usb prior of booting and then boot the instrument and login usb settings should appear then.

Hello Vanessa,
To use artax you must connect to the equipmemt by wifi.
Cheers,
Massimo

Dear Tasos,

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried selecting USB when connecting to the laptop but it still didn’t work. I am now wondering if the real issue is the laptop doesn’t recognize the Tracer?

I will try to go through all the past suggestions from the group to get the PC to recognize the xrf or install the software on another computer and see if that does it.

best,
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

You can definitely use USB.  Ironically, I have written down the directions to switch from USB to bluetooth, but not the other way because I never had a problem with that.  Ugh.  I noticed though that I put a note to make sure to UNcheck the USB enable box before switching over.  Have you tried manually UNchecking wifi before trying to enable USB?  I'll attach my Quickstart guide in case anyone finds it useful.

Hi!

If the cable is not connected or not ok the USB can be greyed out.

It also can have lost the internal connection of the usb. That would require the instrument to be opened.

Try the cable on a different usb port of the pc.

Alexander

Hi Arlen,

Thanks so much for your suggestion and sharing your quick start guide. I did check and uncheck both wifi and bluetooth and nothing happened.  What I ended up doing today was just loading the software onto another laptop and the USB connection worked with no problem. I didn't even need to select it, it selected itself!  There may be something wrong with the USB port of the project laptop I was using or something else is going on.  But for the moment I have a temporary fix to conduct the analysis and I can leave figuring out what's wrong with the other laptop to someone else =)

best,
Vanessa

Hi all,
Related to this recent query, I tried to connect to my Tracer 5i via Bluetooth. The computer can see the XRF and vice versa, but when I try to connect the two, the XRF asks for a PIN. Does anyone know how to address this? I haven't a clue what the pin might be.

Thanks,
Catherine

Hi Catherine,

The pairing code for bluetooth may be 1234

See this video for an example, but it is a video for pairing to a GPS and may be different than a computer

All the best,

Aaron

The network key for connecting via Wifi is 11111111  (8x).  Don't know if that helps you or not.

I think I may have misled you before.  I meant to talk about connecting with wifi, not bluetooth.  Wifi is pretty reliable using a little mini wifi router (our Tracer came with a RavPower router).  Range is good.  If you can, I'd suggest that over bluetooth.

Hi all,

Aaron set this out a few years back, it is a good thing to check if you continue to have problems with USB:

NAVIGATE to the folder (the default location is C:\Programs Files (x86)\Bruker\Bruker Toolbox, if not there check C:\Programs Files\Bruker\Bruker Toolbox).
2.2. RIGHT CLICK on the rndisbruker.inf file and CLICK “Install”.
2.3. System will prompt “Windows Security” dialog. SELECT the “Always trust software from ‘Bruker AXS Handheld, Inc’” AND CLICK “Install”.
After successful installation the system will show the “The operation completed successfully” message.

The Tracer/Titan series of spectrometers communicates via TCP/IP - e.g. it's an internet connection. The rndisbruker.inf file in Program Files will look for that when the USB is installed.

I know the question relates to the greying out of the USB option on the spectrometer itself, but sending in case this needs to be enabled/re-enabled for the spectrometer to know USB is an option when plugged in.

All,

As an update to my recent query regarding connecting a Tracer 5i to a computer via Bluetooth, I have an update. As many of you suggested (THANK YOU!), one must use wifi to connect a computer and use it to collect data with the Tracer, you CANNOT use Bluetooth to do so.

The bluetooth connection is for devices that will either SEND information to the Tracer, like GPS coordinates or barcode numbers, or you can print from the Tracer via Bluetooth, but that's it. +

To reiterate, if you want to eliminate using the USB connection between your computer and the Tracer 5i to collect data, you MUST use a wifi connection. I have access issues with my museum's wifi, so I'm going to do as many of you ALSO suggested, I'm going to buy a router to create the wifi connection between the Tracer and my computer.

Hope this information helps someone out there!

Have a great weekend,
Catherine

Glad you worked it out Catherine,

There should have been a router with the XRF when you purchased it.  I use that WiFi system all the time and find it quite reliable. Let me know if you need any help setting it up.

All the best,

Aaron
