problems with getting photon counts using newer version of Artax (v. 8.0.0.443)

Hi everyone,

I recently tried to obtain the photon counts from some data I collected using the Bayesian Deconvolution process on a newer version of Artax (v. 8.0.0.443).  I used the steps outlined in a PDF that was given me to years ago and also tried those on XRF Guru (they are basically the same just slightly different order for some of the steps). For some reason when I choose "Evaluate Results" to get the counts, the "Results" tab is blank and no data gets exported to Excel.  The steps I use still seem to work using an older version of Artax I have (v. 7.4.0.0) and am able to export to Excel a table with raw and net photon counts for all the elements.

Has anyone else had trouble with this on the newer version of Artax?  Or is the process different in the more recent version of the software?  Just trying to figure out whether the steps are different or whether I just missed something and wasn't doing it correctly.

thanks,
Vanessa

Vanessa,

When they reworked  Artax to be able to run the newer Tracers they messed with the deconvolution and as such it is not reliable at all.  I have both artax versions installed and I use the 7.4 for analysis and the 8.476 for collection.  I wish they would get one software package working well but we may never get that (

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for that info, which is both disappointing and annoying.   I'm sorry to hear that the function is gone or unreliable in the new version and we have to keep two versions of the software on our computers.

Now that I'm working with the 5i I have a lot of feelings about having to use the new version of Artax and/or Bruker Instrument Tools for collecting and processing data.  I am with you that we need one program that works well for all these things and covers the different ways users work with the data. Maybe Bruker should consider putting the counts/deconvolution functionality back into the next version of Artax? Or what may be better is that they should have user experience/beta testing for new versions of existing software or new programs they create to see how these programs actually work for different types of pXRF data collection and processing before the release, kind of like what software/gaming companies do to make sure things work well and all the functionalities people were used to are still there  (Bruker if you're listening...hint, hint).

best,
Vanessa

Hi all,

PyMca software is really good at deconvolution and generating peak areas too.  Not as good for printing and annotating spectra, but might be worth a try.

Hello Everyone (Aaron)
Is Artax (v. 8.0.0.443 ok for analyzing the data? Does deconvolution work on it? It seems to work from our end.
Vanessaa, it seems we can export data.

I am been doing some testing of the different version of artax.  The issues I described earlier seem to be limited to the earlier version of artax 8... The newest version, 8.476 seems to be a pretty close match in deconvolution totals as the 7.4 version. I would recommend contacting Bruker to see if there is new firmware for your Tracer 5i/g and get the updated artax.  Things might run smoother from there.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for letting me know about the deconvolution working in the newer version of Artax.  I will see if I can get an upgrade and if not I can just keep using the old version.

best,
Vanessa
