Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone in the group has had any problems trying to get their Tracer 5i to connect to a windows laptop via USB and may be able to offer some advice on how to resolve the issue.

Our Tracer 5i will no longer connect to 2 different Windows laptops we have here in the lab (running windows 10).  When I open Remote Ctrl or Instrument tools and try to connect, the pXRF serial number doesn't show up in the window.  This was just working on one of the laptops an hour ago but when I tried to reconnect to Instrument Tools to download the data acquired, it would no longer connect.

I checked that the programs are still enabled to get through the firewall and they are. I also followed the instructions in the 5i manual on how to fix this issue and that didn't work.  Uninstalling and reinstalling the software doesn't provide a long term solution-it will let me connect once, but if I disconnect the Tracer and try to reconnect, it stops working again.

If any one else has any suggestions as to what I can try (and maybe explain why this stopped working all of a sudden) I would really appreciate it!

best,
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

The seeing on the instrument might have changed. You will need to check that the USB connectivity is turned on. It may be off or another connectivity method may be active.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for responding so quickly!

I forgot to mention in my email that I did check that and the USB connection is enabled. I actually tested the USB connection using my desktop before sending out the email and everything connected perfectly.  I could use RemoteCtrl and Instrument Tools on that computer with no issues.  Not sure why it stopped working on the laptops.

Vanessa

If anyone used it with the wifi router, for instance, the settings all need to be changed back.  I've also found that some USB ports seem to work better than others on our computers.  Some USB ports can take several minutes to connect, while others connect much more rapidly.

Hi Arlen,

Thanks for those suggestions.  I"ve been the only one using it and always with the USB connection.  I think I've tried all the USB ports on the laptops but can try again. I have a USB hub at home which I can also bring in next time I'm come to the lab in case I need to try out additional port.  I'll also wait 5 minutes to connect  before I give up on it in case it's delayed like you mentioned.

I've never actually tried to connect using the Wifi router.  Maybe that might be a better way to connect than the USB cable.

best,
Vanessa

Maybe worth a try?  It can also be a glitchy connection sometimes I've heard.  I don't use it very often.

Good luck!

Vanessa, there is a.dll program that might need to be run. I have had this happen on my work computer. I will try to track it down for you.

Vanessa,

I cannot get to the office this week, but you might try this. It might be the file that I set aside to reset the drivers on windows 10

Let me know if it helps.

Aarpn

NAVIGATE to the folder selected under Step 8 (the default location is C:\Programs Files (x86)\Bruker\Bruker Toolbox).
2.2. RIGHT CLICK on the rndisbruker.inf file and CLICK “Install”.
2.3. System will prompt “Windows Security” dialog. SELECT the “Always trust software from ‘Bruker AXS Handheld, Inc’” AND CLICK “Install”.
After successful installation the system will show the “The operation completed successfully” message.

Hi Vanessa,

Our lab is experiencing the same issue with the Tracer 5i and tethering to a laptop (works find with a desktop). We have been having conversations with Bruker tech support and our inhouse IT department. We have tried all the steps in the manual to disable the wifi. The issue we have been told is that bridging two wifi networks is considered unsafe. The USB cable makes an NDIS connection. Unlike a printer say, the Tracer is acting like a second network device. Our security policy does not approve of two connections. We are working on getting a security waiver to disable this feature.

All this to say if you find a solution let us know and if this works for us we will let you know.

Best,
Caitlin Mahony

Vanessa,

The file is indeed rndisbruker.inf.  Locate that, right click and run as administrator and then try to connect.

let me know if it works

Dear Vanessa

I am not sure if this is applicable to your case. We were also facing a similar issue with our Olympus Delta Professional as it was not fully recognised by Windows 10. When connected, Windows 10 only recognised it as a generic usb device resulting in the HHXRF serial number not shown in Delta PC software.

After searching a solution on internet, I found that this was to do with Windows 10 Services. Fixing this, you need to open Services.msc and set to automatic start up for the service “Remote Access Connection Manager Properties”. Restarting the computer will recognise the device as it should be (Delta PC software will show the correct serial number of the device).

Hope this helps.

Best,

Pi

Hi!
I have one as well and it works fine… BUT i also use the latest Software on WIN 10. Go to the BRUKER website and find the TRACER5i page; under service download the Bruker instrument tools
Ensure to READ the installation manual as you will need admin privileges to install. Install and then check the section on  firewall settings to allow the system to be seen by the software. Your evil windows is blocking by default all ports used by the software…
The recent WIN update made “improvements” in the security and most like reset the fire wall and trust settings on the driver.

Worst case you might also need to update the software on the TRACER .. check with the BRUKER support; latest version of the instrument firmware might be on brukeyrsupport.com

I am using the system as part of my job at SGS in the US (this email here is my private setup).

Best regards!

Alexander
