What will be the framework? I think It will be better to use an
existing framework. If you agree with me, please choose 1 from the
list:

1. CakePHP
2. CodeIgniter
3. Zend

Why not we build our own framework as learning is one of our
objectives.I think for the meantime, we use existing framework(as
suggested above) while our project is in progress.

Shilpi.

Yes, I think you're right, we're not in a hurry anyway...

Creating a new framework is also a good idea. But for software
engineering it is always said using tested and proving thing is
better. When you are working on something existing, then you can work
smoothly. If there is a problem, there are answers. And the main point
is documentation. As all the existing frameworks have very good docs,
you can get it very easily. And it is always said to follow a standard
rather than building a new standard.

And Daniel, the matter is not about time. We have time but we should
do our work on structured and readable way. And I think thats why, we
should follow an existing framework.

that's a good point there, probably we can brainstorm on the best
framework we're going to use, I am not familiar with any framework
other than drupal for now, I guess, I can talk about it's good points
and weaknesses... and others can also share their experiences using
other frameworks, what do you think?

Hi,
I would suggest to use CodeIgniter. The only reason may be it is very
easy to learn and use. I have not used CakePHP or Zend framework. I
may include another frameworks Symfony, kohana. So there may be a
debate on the four framework
1. CakePHP
2. CodeIgniter
3. Zend
4. Symfony
5. kohana

I guess we may create a poll to cast vote and also continue discussing
in the group. so that finally we can choose the best one.

We can select a project and use a framework. I also customized drupal. We can use it as our starting point.

I don't think poll is the best idea. we should go with the pros & cons
of framework. one more thing I want to add, that some people should be
expert on that framework which one we gonna choose.

I think we have a goal that is we'll develope our own CMS engine.

We suppose to establish our architecture(block diagram of our CMS)
first rather than choosing framework so the architecture will show us
the way i mean which framework we actually needed.

i think we're going to use and modify a framework, that's what we're
all going to do, am I right?

Salam,
I think we should use existing framework like phpcake or codeignitor.
and my opinion is first learn best framework then any one in the
group
know how the framework and if some thing is not available in the
framework
write it down then in future we will develop our own framework .
I Hope you people may be agree ??

Thx & Regards,

I too agree with Tahir...As we are inclined towards using what is
available, we can think of using a framework. We still need to spend
time to learning the framework and its intricacies. The CMS we are
planning to develop, and the framework we would develop later, should
try to use something which is generic and versatile..

Assalamualikum to all

I totally agreed Santu, as i am new in any framework but as i check
its documentation, its looks very easy to learn..

so, i suggest to use CI for this project..

I am inclined to use Zend framework(ZF). I would feel a lot safer
using a framework created by the very company that maintains the
language.

From what I have seen, CI is definitely a good candidate for the cms.
It is small and blazingly fast. But this is also its weak point. It
will quickly get you to somewhere but after that you are on your own.
For example, it lacks a proper search engine module while ZF has the
industy standard veteran "lucene". On the other hand, Zend
framework(ZF) has huge libraries and APIs. Another excellent thing is
all its modules are totally separate. From software engineering
viewpoint, this means zero coupling. This is a quality that all
software engineers thrives for. And look at ZF's client list: IBM,
FOX, RightMedia. Thats got to be something!

As for other framework, CakePHP's orm is excellent. But associating a
model with every action, even if the model is a dummy one , is a bit
too much for me. Symfony is far too much to hassle for newbies like
us. And kohana is still not matured enough.

Anyway, these are all my opinion. I would love to hear others opinion.

Hi Mamun, That was a bold mail on supporting Zend. I think we should
choose Zend. Though Zend starts after CakePHP and CI but it will
surely be on number 1 becaz it is made by the PHP company.

It seems all are for ZF :)
I appritiate those thoughts which we looking in a framework while some
of us wanna learn some framework like ZF.

I vote for ZF because this gonna fire up our CMS.(hopefully)

>Why not let us discuss about ZF?

@Mamnun: Please share the basics of ZF or tutorials then we'll get rid
of it.

After the basic discussion we may scale out how we are gonna utilize
it for PXCMS.

If anyone ever worked on any MVC platform(not necessarily php), he will find Zend Framework as easy as pie ;)

Here is a list of resources for ZF:

Hope these helps.
