Hi,

I am a noob of Linux. I am using Ubuntu 18.08 and installed PWM-1.9.1.
I am trying to install the PWM in my server but I got this message.
Screen Shot 2019-11-25 at 11.14.51 AM.png

I was following the below step, but still getting the issue.
Screen Shot 2019-11-25 at 11.15.48 AM.png

Is there any step I missed?

As the error and instructions say you haven't set the application path environment variable.

Application path = the location on the server example: /media/pwm/

If you changed the name of the .WAR file make sure you also changed the name when you entered it into the tomcat

Config file

PWM_APPLICATIONPATH= /media/pwm the highlighted part is what you need to pay attention too. Make sure that is the same as the entry into the tomcat config file

Don’t set it in /media/pwm

Set it in /opt/tomcat/webapps/pwm-1.9.1

Then restart tomcat

I followed the guide at https://github.com/pwm-project/pwm/wiki/Installation-on-Ubuntu-Server-16.04-LTS

My tomcat config file as referenced at /etc/default/tomcat8   (I added the path at the top)

I then reloaded /pwm via the tomcat manager site and restarted the serive via terminal

Then went to the page (mine is located at 192.168.1.17:8080/pwm) and the configuration path is shown.

Double check the ownership and make sure tomcat8 is the owner of the /media/pwm folder

HOPE THIS HELPS

Also I noticed your in the opt directory.

The instructions should lead you to install tomcat in the

/var/lib/tomcat8/webapps

Maybe install to that location will help. (My directory for reference)

I followed the exact same instructions and I'm running into the same issue.  I presume the rights of the /media/pwm directory are correct ?

pwm01.png

The .war file seems to be installed correctly :

pwm02.png

And /etc/default/tomcat9 contains this (as first) entry :

pwm03.png

Of course I have restarted tomcat9 after making those adjustments, but I'm still getting this error :

pwm04.png

So any tips/ideas would be very much appreciated !

Thanks,
Geert

It looks like your not setting the environment variable correctly.  Since your using a disto-supplied version of tomcat you'll have to check with your disto on where to set the environment var.

Hi,

Rename your war file from pwm-1.9.1 to pwm alone.

Then copy that pwm war file to tomcat9/webapps folder

Please change this application path inside the web.xml file as below.

vim /opt/tomcat9/webapps/pwm/WEB-INF/web.xml

Here you have to mention the application path..

Apply this permission to /media/pwm folder

Chown -R .tomcat /media/pwm

It will work !!!! All the best

Hey guys! T3chGuy77 here. I suggest you use my new guide for Ubuntu 20.04. It has every step needed and the most important for this issue is the web.xml needs to be edited, for some reason the other suggested dev way does not ever seem to work but the web.xml works 100% but is not suggested by devs because when you upgrade your software then that file gets overwritten. I think you can see my new guide but it's in draft status. Also note that you should do a ' sudo chown -R tomcat:tomcat /home/YourHomeFolder/pwm-data/ ' . Again my guide has a few bugs or issues that I am working on fixing. Report back if that does not work. ~T3chGuy77

  1. On the Windows taskbar, right-click the Windows icon and select System.
  2. In the Settings window, under Related Settings, click Advanced system settings. ...
  3. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables. ...
  4. Click New to create a new environment variable.

The variable name needs to be exactly  PWM_APPLICATIONPATH and the value needs to be a location, not a link to the web.xml file, i.e C:\Programdata\pwm for example and writable by the tomcat service account.
