5017 ERROR_DIRECTORY_UNAVAILABLE

I have been trying to resolve this issue, i followed the installation instructions got to the config page added my accounts and the check status with filling in the accounts worked just find, however I run into this problem

Directory unavailable. If this error occurs repeatedly please contact your help desk. { 5017 ERROR_DIRECTORY_UNAVAILABLE (unexpected error during ldap search (profile=default), error: 5017 ERROR_DIRECTORY_UNAVAILABLE (unable to reach ldap server)) }

It's unusual the config check passed but you get this error during a search, it's probably due to a more advanced setting this configured (unbalanced parenthesis in filters being most common).  Try setting the log level to debug or trace and you will find the root cause of the error in the server logs.

have not tinkered with the advanced settings in the filter, if you could tell me where the filters are i can have a look, i'm just at the basic setup to this point, any assistace would be greatly appreicated

Many settings have LDAP filters.  If you haven't modified them they are not the problem.  Have you looked at the logs?
