Proposal to integrate UNICAMP PV modeling classes into the pvlib tutorials

Hello everyone,

We are researchers and professors from the Power Electronics
Laboratories (LEPO) at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.
Alongside Professors João Lucas, Gustavo Fraidenraich, and Tarcio
Barros, I have developed a GitHub repository containing teaching
materials and practical classes on photovoltaic (PV) system modeling:

The repository was developed as part of our graduate-level courses at
UNICAMP, with the goal of introducing Master's and PhD students to the
fundamental concepts and methodologies of PV system modeling. The
classes make use of Python and pvlib-python to provide students with
hands-on experience in modeling the different stages of a PV system.

We are interested in integrating these materials into the pvlib
Tutorials platform (https://pv-tutorials.github.io/) so that they can
also be made available to the broader PV modeling community.

We believe that making these materials publicly available could be
valuable for the community, particularly by supporting the adoption of
pvlib-python in university courses and helping students develop
practical skills in PV system modeling.

We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the repository and would
also like to learn more about the procedure and requirements for
contributing these materials to the pvlib Tutorials repository.

I'll discuss the proposal with the other maintainers of the tutorials repository, My first reaction: sure! but they may have other concerns.

It is very timely to see these materials. We recently put out a small report on the state of formal education in PV performance modeling: Education for PV Modeling Professionals: Survey of Educators (Technical Report) | OSTI.GOV

You may be interested in the findings.

We were not aware of, nor did our searches turn up, the courses at UNICAMP, otherwise we'd have gladly included your institution in the questionnaire.

Any interest in translating the instructional materials to English, the make them accessible to a more international audience? Even with AI that looks to be a lot of editing, and perhaps that could be accomplished with a larger group of contributors.

That's fantastic news. Thank you for your feedback and for sharing the
report; we will certainly look into it, as it is of great interest to
us.

We are also interested in working on the translation. However, before
proceeding, it was important for us to confirm whether the community
would find this useful. We are glad to make any improvements needed.

We will proceed with the translation and aim to make the material more
didactic for other researchers and students interested in the
fundamentals of PV modeling.

The PV-tutorials maintainers are unanimous - we'd welcome the material as it is and also welcome any translated materials you may produce.

The materials in these repositories are static, in the sense that we're not maintaining them and their content may fall out of synch with pvlib-python as it develops. That's intentional, because the repositories are mainly archival for different events. If your material seeks to be "living" then we can't really help with that - that's just the reality of very limited time from five volunteer maintainers.

If you are OK with being the maintainer for your repository, then I'll get back to you with some instructions how to create and set it up.

Hi Joao,

Easiest thing to do is for us to add a card to the PV-Tutorials home page which links to your own repository.  That way you retain admin control over your repository. If for some reason you'd prefer to transfer the repository to the PV-Tutorials organization, that could be done also.

The home page displays the cards:  Index — pvlib tutorials

The code for the cards is here:  pv-tutorials.github.io/source/index.rst at main · PV-Tutorials/pv-tutorials.github.io

We ask that your one-line summary be in English but specify that the source material is in Portuguese.

Logos are nice. They can be uploaded to PV-Tutorials in your pull request to add the card.
