3 hour 6 hourly GFS mixed average

I just  wanted to confirm, when working with GFS mixed average data, 

The interpolation method is only applied to (3 hourly averages), or it also applied to 6 hourly averages to generate hourly averages ?

I think you want to “unmix” and then interpolate.
