Hello, I wanted to find out more on the steps to join the GSoC. I have never heard of it and recently just stumbled upon it. I am not a student; I recently graduated as an electrical engineer, and I am currently working for a mini-grid installation and design company. I am also a remote software developer. My main languages are TypeScript, Dart, and C++.

I feel this project and competition combine both of my skill sets, and I wanted to know how to go about it. Also, I want to be a long-term contributor. To this project. You can check out my my github and my linked-in

Hi Kanyanta! It's nice to hear from interested people.

Former GSoC pvlib participant here.
I greatly recommend reading Google's pages on GSoC, they get into broad and concrete details of the whole process. https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/how-it-works.

Regarding GSoC in pvlib, here you can read about projects to work on and some other useful info: https://github.com/pvlib/pvlib-python/wiki/GSoC-2025-Projects. You can also propose your own ideas. In any case, better to communicate consistently (especially with the mentors listed in that page!).

Unluckily, GSoC 2025 application period ended some time ago. You will have to wait for the 2026 edition. In the meantime, take your time to learn/expand on Python and get to know the project (you can try to contribute small bugfixes, it's not a requirement thou but it will teach you a lot of the frameworks and libraries used here, and the contribution dynamics). The more you know about pvlib, the better. In any case, keep an eye on the timeline Google will publish for next year edition, and be aware of the approximate amount of time projects take.

Feel free to reach out if you have any doubts.

Best,
Echedey.

Thanks, I will follow your guidance. I guess I will sharpen my Python and go through the repo here and there and start contributing still. I am guessing I could still become an active contributor even without the competition, right?
