Hi pvlib pythonistas,

I thought this email summarized the NumFOCUS small development grants program so well, it made sense just to forward rather than repeat it verbatim. Any professors, grad students, independent researchers, and entrepreneurs out there (and you know who you are) are welcome to take advantage of this. The only requirements are that:
1. there can only be 1 application from pvlib python per development cycle, of which there are 3 per year
2. pvlib python can only receive 2 small dev grants per year, up to $5k each.

So if you have an idea for a grant proposal, please post it here so we can discuss and choose. I go by the SP solar motto which is, "If it's good for Solar, then it's good for everyone." So no judgement, just throwing this out there. We've never even applied for a small dev grant. Maybe this can be year 1. See https://numfocus.org/programs/sustainability#sdg for more info.

thanks,
Mark

Subject: [SciPy-Dev] NumFOCUS Small Development Grants
To: SciPy Developers List <scip...@python.org>

Hi everyone,

For those of you who don’t know, SciPy is part of the NumFOCUS organization. This allows receiving funding in general and also for something called: Small Development Grants (SDG).
This grant is to help support development cost up to $5000. So if you have a project (something from the roadmap for instance) and need support for a PhD student, or simply your own compensation, this can help!

There are 3 grant cycles per year. It is too late for the first cycle, but you have time to prepare for the next ones (May).

If you consider doing this, a quick note:

Any NumFOCUS Fiscally Sponsored or Affiliated project is eligible to submit 1 proposal per grant cycle.
If a project would like to solicit proposals from its internal community, leaders must organize
their own review process to select the proposal submitted on behalf of the project.

Each project may receive a maximum of 2 grants per calendar year.

Cheers,
Pamphile

Could be a way to jump-start PV Mismatch 2?

I have seen that pvlib doesn't got a grant at all previous rounds.

Perhaps the tutorial/documentation task from the GSoC would be also eligable.
I have send in a proposal for the GSoC. If there would be any interest in also turning in a proposal for that task/grand, I would prepare or change the proposal.
I don't know if there are more ideas or proposals in the pipeline to make an application to the grant. Perhaps there is a voting sytem what proposal should be send in or something like that.

thank you for your time,
Nils

I'd like to send a proposal for batteries/storage if there is interest in merging that feature into `pvlib`. :-)

I would work on the proposal during the summer (July/August) to have it ready before September (I am assuming that would be the deadline for the last cycle).

Interesting ideas, both for battery storage or pvmm2. Anton, could you administer the funds? One of the problems is that neither Will, Cliff, Kevin, nor I can use the small development grant because of our employment restrictions. Then it's just a matter of finding the right candidate (like yourself perhaps) who is qualified to do the work and has the time. The small dev grants are up to $5k would only fund a single developer for about 30 hours at $150-175/hr. That's not much. it might not be worth it, although I think the barrier to getting the funding might be low. Also each project can receive up to 2 grants per year, so possibly up to 60 hours total.
