I am excited about how this doll turned out. My first doll is purple and it did turn out cute, but I started to work on the yellow doll and it immediately reminded me of the sun. I am glad I went that route. You can not help but be happy with this doll.
Whilst creating Solveig and sculpting her face over many hours of needle-felting, I could see her emerge from that wool and every time my heart did a little jump: a real baby! with chubby and tender cheeks, a happy smile from being content when all your simple needs are met, smirky eyes, button nose, and then when I weighted certain parts of her body - it was all over. I might have to take a wee break from making cloth babies and keep the hands busy with the 'older' children because they sure break havoc in the hormones around here.
As you can see, Solveig is at that state which babies are sitting by themselves, this is a blessing as they are very curious and can keep themselves busy looking around them, but is also a bit unnerving as sometimes they lose balance and off they go. Surrounding her with a few pillows or setting her down on a cozy blanket with a bit of cushy filling, will take most of the nightmare out of the equation. I do recommend baby-proofing the house even if she is not crawling yet.
Solveig is a natural fiber art doll, weighted with glass beads in several parts of her body. She measures approximately 15" all scrunched up, and if she stretches real nice she measures up to 18", this due to the fabric joins that allow her arms and legs to move around in a more realistic baby pose (she is not jointed!). She is stuffed very firmly with wool and was created using swiss cotton fabric. Her hais is made with mohair yarn and can be gently styled ( I used a bit of water and a pencil to curl her hair). Solveig is recommended as a toy for a child 7+ or an adult collector, she needs to be treated *very* gently due to her weight and age.
She is wearing a comfortable kimono-style dress with long skirt, gathered sleeves and twill ribbon ties. Dress is made with beautiful fabric designed by a dear friend (Amy at Nana Company - so happy to use her fabrics on Solveig!). She has a pair of cozy lambswool pants, a diaper obviously, knitted tall boots to match her sweet wool bonnet and a lovely angora mini-shawl/collar that can be tied around her chest for layering. All of Solveig's clothes must be handwashed and treated with loving care, just as they were created.

Now a little tidbit about her name. I call her my 'little ray of sunshine' not just because of her bright smile and beautiful fiery hair, but her name is derived from Old Norse, and means sl "sun" and veig "strength". It is pronounced "sool-vie". Lately I am very inspired by ancient names and folk stories. Hope you love Little Solveig and are looking forward to whoever else will be coming out of my hands this year.

For two years, Jacksonville-based Showbiz Productions has mined gold from selling products featuring themes ripped from the day's headlines.The company offers a Michael Vick dog chew toy, Sarah Palin boxing shorts, and T-shirts depicting everything from Barack Obama to Tim Tebow to Bigfoot.But after an outpouring of public opposition following a TV appearance Monday night, the company initially slammed the brakes on sales of the $29.95 Caylee Sunshine Doll, a doll representing slain Orlando 2-year-old Caylee Anthony.Now, there are three dolls on www.cayleedoll.com that look the same as the originally planned doll but do not bear Caylee's name: "Hope Sunshine," "Gracie Sunshine," and "Sally Sunshine," now called The Inspirational Sunshine Dolls. Caylee Sunshine T-shirts and bracelets are also featured items on the site."The Sunshine Doll Collection is a symbol of 'every child' in this world," the Web site states. "Hold onto to your doll to remind you that little Caylee is safe in Heaven, embraced in loving arms forever!"The company had announced plans on Monday to begin sales of the doll Tuesday as a tribute to the toddler, whose body was found in woods near the home of her grandparents last month. The dolls, which are dressed in jeans, canvas shoes and a white T-shirt with a yellow Hope, Gracie or Sally "Sunshine" logo, also contains a sound chip that played the song, "You are my Sunshine" when its navel was pressed.Showbiz Promotions President Jaime Salcedo said the dolls are blonde and blue-eyed, in a deliberate effort not to resemble Caylee Anthony - who was brown-haired and brown-eyed. Salcedo said all profits from the sales of the doll and associated merchandise were to go to organizations that fight child abduction and exploitation. However, the original release did not mention that any proceeds from the doll sales would go to charity.But Tuesday, after a Monday night appearance on the Headline News Nancy Grace show , Salcedo announced the dolls would not be available via the Internet at noon as previously planned. The company was to ship 1,000 dolls Feb. 26, but halting sales was a contingency plan if response was not favorable, Salcedo said."It was very important that we allow the press to present our idea to the public first, in an effort to measure the reaction to our fund raising efforts," he said in a news release.Salcedo said he wasn't given a fair shake on Nancy Grace's show. Grace is known for aggressively covering the ongoing saga of the girl's mother and accused killer, Casey Anthony. A show guest vilified the doll and Salcedo's company before Salcedo appeared, and Grace questioned the veracity of his plans to donate profits."She characterized us as people who created a doll in the likeness of Caylee Anthony and that we were very sleazy; and she didn't allow us to say anything," Salcedo said. "It's caused the general public to get very upset."Salcedo ran into problems in 2007 when it announced he would give proceeds of sales of a dog chew toy fashioned to look like former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to the Jacksonville Humane Society after Vick was arrested for participating in a dog-fighting ring. But the company didn't tell the humane society first and the humane society objected to Salcedo's methods.Salcedo explained that was a lesson learned and that his company contacted the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to discuss his intention to donate to the organization, but found that the name of the charity could not be mentioned because it bore the name of a missing child case the center had publicized.But National Center for Missing & Exploited Children president Ernie Allen told a different story in no uncertain terms Tuesday."The producers of the doll called us yesterday. Our response was that this was outrageous, and we think of it as trading on the tragedy of a little girl, and we would never be associated with anything that exploits the tragic death of a young child. Not only are we not involved, but we will not be involved with anything like this, ever," Allen said.Profits from sales of Caylee Sunshine T-Shirts, bracelets and stickers still will be donated, Salcedo said."One hundred percent of the profits will go to charity," he said. "If we have to do it anonymously, that's what we'll do. We invite an investigation if that's what needs to happen. Our resolve is even stronger now. I will do all I can to prevent this from happening to any child."The doll may come back in a different form or with a different name, he said.
