Since a "businessman" can mean anyone in industry or commerce,[2] businesspeople have existed as long as industry and commerce have existed. "Commerce" can simply mean "trade", and trade has existed through all of recorded history. The first businesspeople in human history were traders or merchants.[3]

Merchants emerged as a social class in medieval Italy (compare, for example, the Vaishya, the traditional merchant caste in Indian society). Between 1300 and 1500, modern accounting, the bill of exchange, and limited liability were invented, and thus, the world saw "the first true bankers", who were certainly businesspeople.[4][need quotation to verify]

Around the same time, Europe saw the "emergence of rich merchants."[5] This "rise of the merchant class" came as Europe "needed a middleman" for the first time, and these "burghers" or "bourgeois" were the people who played this role.[6]

Europe became the dominant global commercial power in the 16th century, and as Europeans developed new tools for business, new types of "business people" began to use those tools. In this period, Europe developed and used paper money, cheques, and joint-stock companies (and their shares of capital stock).[7] Developments in actuarial science and underwriting led to insurance.[8] Together, these new tools were used by a new kind of businessperson, the capitalist. These people owned or financed businesses as investors, but they were not merchants of goods. These capitalists were a major force in the Industrial Revolution.[9]

Salaries for businesspeople vary.[15][16] The salaries of businesspeople can be as high as billions of dollars per year. For example, the owner of Microsoft, Bill Gates makes $4 billion per year. The high salaries which businesspeople earn have often been a source of criticism from many who believe they are paid excessively.[17]

An entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business or multiple businesses (serial entrepreneur). Entrepreneurship may be defined as the creation or extraction of economic value. It is generally thought to embrace risks beyond what is normally encountered in starting a business. Its motivation can include other values than simply economic ones.[18][19][20]In general usage, because the distinction is not clear-cut, the term 'entrepreneur' may be used as a (self-)promoting euphemism for 'businessperson', or it may serve to objectively indicate particular passion and risk-taking in a business field. Still, the distinction is only one by degrees.[21][22]

On the campaign trail, most people focus on the Naval Aviation part of my resume, but I am very proud of my business experience outside of the Navy as well. I put my business acumen and experiences into two main buckets: Real Estate and my time at Raytheon. From renovating low-income housing to giving Top Secret briefings in the Pentagon (I still hold the highest level security clearances), these are the experiences that have molded me into an astute businessman who values capitalism and competition.

The bottom line: I have been in the trenches as a businessman for nearly 2 decades and despite the Great Recession and Sequestration, I have managed to be successful in real estate and the aerospace and defense industry. I know the value of hard work and the importance of paying attention to financial realities such as budgets and profit/loss. More importantly, I know how hard it is to make money in California, and I know we need to stop punishing Americans for being successful! We should be proud of our successes! I am a first-generation American and the son of an immigrant, and through hard work and sacrifice, I have had a dream career in the military and a variety of opportunities in the business world. The United States is the only place in the world where stories like mine happen on a regular basis, and we need to work to keep it that way!

Rodolphe Jaar, 51, is the first person to be convicted and sentenced in what U.S. prosecutors have described as a broad plot by conspirators in Haiti and Florida to reap lucrative contracts under a new administration once Mose was out of the way.

Jaar, who has dual Haitian and Chilean citizenship, previously had been an informant for the U.S. government and had been convicted of drug trafficking a decade ago. He pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit murder or kidnapping outside the United States, and to providing material support resulting in death.

Federal Judge Jos E. Martnez handed down the sentence at a 10-minute hearing at the federal court in downtown Miami. Jaar received the maximum sentence he faced despite pleading guilty and pledging to cooperate with investigators in hopes of receiving a lighter sentence.

In addition to Jaar, the other defendants in Miami are: former Colombian soldiers Mario Palacios and Germn Alejandro Rivera Garca; former Haitian Senator John Joel Joseph; Haitian-Americans James Solages, Joseph Vincent and Christian Emmanuel Sanon; American Federick Joseph Bergmann; Colombian Arcangel Pretel Ortiz; Venezuelan-American Antonio Intriago, and the Ecuadorian-American financier Walter Veintemilla.

The businessman declined to make statements to the judge and has the right to appeal the sentence within two weeks. His lawyer, Frank Schwartz, told The Associated Press after the hearing that Jaar has not yet decided whether to do so and declined to comment further.

Jaar arrived in South Florida in January 2022 after being detained in the Dominican Republic, and has been held in federal detention ever since. According to U.S. authorities, he voluntarily agreed to be transferred to Miami to face the charges against him.

According to charging documents, the conspirators initially planned to kidnap the Haitian president, and later changed the plan to kill him instead. Plotters had hoped to win contracts under a successor to Mose, investigators allege.

Jaar was responsible for supplying weapons to Colombian mercenaries for the operation, court documents say. Several of the former South American soldiers also stayed in a house controlled by Jaar, according to the charges.

The international student population at Davidson has doubled since his efforts began.

Customer service complaints are often made through Twitter today, but in the 18th century BC, they were chiseled onto tablets in cuneiform script. Some of the oldest known tablets are directed at a Mesopotamian businessman named Ea-Nasir who, judging by the sheer number of complaints against him, was possibly the worst businessman of the second millennium BC.

The city of Ur, located in modern-day Iraq, was excavated in the early 20th century largely by British archaeologist Sir Leonard Wooley. One specific house contained a number of inscribed cuneiform tablets, business letters addressed to one Ea-Nasir. He was a member of the Alik Tilmun, a guild of merchants based in Dilmun, another archaeological site in the Persian Gulf, in contemporary Bahrain. Dilmun's location in the Gulf waters made it an excellent place for businessmen like Ea-Nasir to engage in import-export activities.

Based on more than a dozen surviving tablets squirreled away in his own house, archaeologists have discovered that Ea-Nasir was a big-shot copper trader, dealing mostly in wholesale ingots, but also in the finished metal products and, on occasion, textiles and foodstuffs.

At the beginning of his career, Ea-Nasir was buying and selling for the palace at Ur and was considered a good credit risk. But at one point, he began spending more time in Dilmun, causing his creditors to write him nasty letters asking where their stuff was. This is where we pick up his story, through the eyes of his ripped-off customers.

A man named Arbituram sends a note to Ea-Nasir, saying: "... you have given the copper... and give the silver and its profit to Nigga-Nanna. I have made you issue a tablet. Why have you not given me the copper? If you do not give it, I will recall your pledges. Good copper, give again and again. Send me a man."

Presumably a little while later, Arbituram gets restless and writes to Ea-Nasir, "Why have you not given the copper to Nigga-Nanna? Ili-idinnam says 'The copper that Nigga-Nanna has received is mine!' Be kind enough to give the copper, as much as he has a claim on you, to Nigga-Nanna."

A couple other people get in on the action. Appa tells Ea-Nasir: "The copper of mine, give it to Nigga-Nanna - good copper, in order that my heart shall not be troubled." And Imgur-Sin exasperatedly writes to Ea-Nasir: "May Samas [the sun god] bless your life. Give good copper under seal to Nigga-Nanna. Now you have had me issue 10 shekels of silver. In order that your heart shall not be troubled, give good copper to him. Do you not know how tired I am [of this]?"
