Press Release:: Seattle Delegates to Protest the GFMD in Mexico

SEATTLE, WA – On Thursday October 28 6:30pm, Pinay sa Seattle will host its 4th Anniversary Show, “DIWATA: Spirit of Creation, Spirit of Revolution”, at Washington Hall 1117 Minor Avenue. A portion of the proceeds from the event will help send at least 3 delegates to the 3rd International Assembly of the International Alliance of Migrants and Refugees from Nov. 6-10th in Mexico. The three delegates include Pinay sa Seattle members Donna Denina and Katrina Pestano (aka Rogue Pinay); and Ace Saturay of the Philippine-US Solidarity Organization (PUSO).
The IAMR is an assembly and protest action organized by grassroots organizations as the counter event to the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), an imperialist state-led initiative that tries to “sell” neoliberal policies using remittances from migrants working abroad as a tool for development in underdeveloped nations. Through the IAMR, migrants and refugees have a vehicle through which to reject the pro-neoliberal GFMD framework that promotes and relies on the forced migration of people. At the IAMR, migrants themselves will unite in opposition to the GFMD and demand that governments in support of their policies address the root causes of the massive migration and poverty of peoples from poor and underdeveloped countries all over the world.
The conveners of the International Alliance includes Frente Indigena de Organizaciones Binacionales (FIOB), the May 1st Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights, Miredes International (Mexico), Migrante International (Philippines), Asia Pacific Mission for Migrants (Hong Kong), Migrante Canada, National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON-USA), Movimiento Migrante Meso-Americano, Familias Latinas Unidas Sin Fronteras are initiators of these events.
