ANAKBAYAN SEATTLE PRESENTS
BANGON: GET UP, STAND UP
Celebrating Eight Years of Community Organizing and Empowering Youth in Seattle
Seattle, Washington – November 15, 2010 -- AnakBayan Seattle proudly celebrates its eight year anniversary on Friday, December 3, 2010 through mixed multimedia presentations and live cultural performances at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle. Doors will be open at 6:00pm with the program starting promptly at 7:00pm. All attendees confirmed on the Facebook event page will automatically be entered into a raffle drawing for a special prize package that evening.
As the first overseas chapter of AnakBayan Philippines, AnakBayan Seattle, founded on November 30, 2002, was formed out of the conditions to create an international mass organization directly connected to the youth and student struggle in the Philippines. November 30th also marks the birthday of Filipino revolutionary Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Katipunan - who lead the Philippines in resistance against Spanish colonial rule.
“Bangon”, a Tagalog word meaning to rise up or start again, pays tribute to the earlier generations of AnakBayan Seattle, and abroad, as the organization continues to thrive eight years later. AnakBayan Seattle is a Filipino American organization that organizes and educates Filipino American youth and students about the ongoing struggle of Filipinos locally, in the homeland and abroad. Since it’s founding eight years ago, AnakBayan Seattle has continued to facilitate educational discussions in the community about Filipino and Filipino American history, issues problems and solutions.
In addition, AnakBayan Seattle has sponsored youth-led Exposure Trips to the Philippines in order to allow Filipino Americans to experience the rich culture and current social conditions through BAYAN Philippines, a multi-sectoral alliance of progressive organizations that fight for the rights and welfare of Filipinos. A portion of the proceeds from “Bangon: Get Up, Stand Up” will go towards sending members on an Exposure Trip program in the Philippines in the Summer of 2011.
Advanced tickets are available for only $5 through any AnakBayan Seattle member, and only $8 for tickets at the door. For more information, please visit the “Bangon: Get Up, Rise Up” Facebook event page at www.tinyurl.com/bangon2010.
