Hi all,
Sorry I haven't written before. Firstly because I couldn't get
August's book but more impotantly I have been on an overseas holoday
for the last two weeks. If you ever want to go on a great holiday
spend go to Istanbul. Great people, A lot of sightseeing, good food
and shopping.
I read "A Fraction of the Whole" by Steve Toltz some time ago and
enjoyed it. I could relate to most of the characters because I have
met people like them. one of my best friends is like Martin dean.
Always philosophizing and finds it difficult to get on with anyone.
The uncle, Terry Dean, who decides to kill sports cheat and is cheered
by everyone for doing so and later is found alive in Thailand is
another character that I can understand. As for the narrator Jasper
Dean, the son of Martin, his relationship with his father is
contentious but also inseparable. This is another relationship that I
know of that is very similar to a son/mother relation I know.
if this story occurred to people who didn't have these personalities
and relationships then the story would be unbelievable but this tale
is very character driven and so no matter how bizarre the story gets
eg, Martin becoming a senator, it seems to fit into the story.
Other people who have read this book have also enjoyed it. My mum said
that she would feel sometimes want to stop reading it but would just
go a few pages more and suddenly find a new twist in the story that
took a new direction.
Anyway I hope othes enjoy this book as much as I did.
Cheers
Glenn
