Ok, I installed PureAdmin through the add/remove programs menu in
ubuntu 8.10 32bit.

It is running as 'standalone'

I have created a couple of virtual users, set their directories to the
same folder (root of the primary user)

I can login with the regular login information from the primary user
of the machine, but when I attempt to log in with the information of
the virtual users that I created, it accepts the username, but always
says "530 Login authentication failed" when it comes to the password.

Any help would be hot.

The end desired result is to create a couple of virtual ftp users with
read only access to a few folders in the main user's account.

Maybe you haven't enabled virtual user authentication?

cd /etc/pure-ftpd/auth
sudo ln -s ../conf/PureDB 50pure

This page shows some more help, but the above should make pureadmin work for you

Check wether it is not the UID below 1000 issue (here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PureFTP)

Notice that if you are using pureadmin you might encounter additionnal bug (pureadmin insists on creating users in the wrong UID / GID range ...). To fix this issue i have managed to make pureadmin happy creating ftpuser2 / ftpgroup2 and selected in user configuration the right ftpuser / ftpgroup with UID / GID more than 1000
