Hello everyone,
If you have not heard the news, I want to inform you that on April 25, Cameroon was placed on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning list.
This is in relation to the recent activities of Boko Haram, a miltant organization which has been responsible for a recent uptick in expatriate and "western" kidnappings throughout Northern Nigeria, Southern Niger, Chad, and Northern Cameroon.
Please read the full Travel Warning here:
http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/alertswarnings/cameroon-travel-warning.html
At present, we expect that our trip to Cameroon will proceed as planned because ACREST is quite far from the identified risk zones (the Far North, North, and Adamaoua regions of Cameroon), but we should bear in mind that the situation could change for better
or worse between now and July. I think it is important, therefore, for us to all stay informed.
As the Travel Warning makes mention of a number of specific borders, I am attaching maps to show the location of AREST in relation to:
- The border with Nigeria
- The border with the Adamaoua state
- The North region
- The Central African Republic (CAR)
I am working with Mary and Anne in GEP and Vincent at ACREST to prepare the necessary documentation for our trip this summer.
I will let you know as I hear more information. Until then, please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Patrick
