Hi All,

 

Please find a packing list especially made for Student Indians travelling to US for the first time. This list was made in late 90's by my seniors at IIT Delhi and it has helped me pack and acted as a guide each time I travelled to US or anywhere abroad. It was made for guys but girls can use it as a good guideline.

 

Tanmay - answers to all your questions:

1. Not yet received I-20. Expecting to get it in a couple of weeks.

2. Will plan interview post receiving I-20

3. I will travel to India in mid June and come back to Chicago by mid- July. I will either take American (direct flight) or take Lufthansa + United via Frankfurt.

4. Not yet checked out housing in Purdue. Will do that in June/July. In any case, I will stay off-campus.

5. Not been offered any financial aid

6. I plan to complete Purdue Career Account in a couple of days.

hopping flight (stops at bahrain and london) that I found interesting.
It might be tiring traveling on it, but I will be able to save some

2. Booked the interview at the Chennai consulate for June 11
3. Planning to take a flight via Dubai/Abu Dhabi
4. Definitely going to stay off campus as advised by Krannert alumni, but not yet finalised on any option yet.

5. Not been offered any financial aid

6. Not done anything on the Purdue career account yet.

Hi all

I got the visa today.
They have given it to me for 5 years (till 2015).

But, there is an issue. My passport expires in october 2012.
Now, if I get my passport renewed, will I have to get the visa renewed
too, or the American consulate will give me the visa automatically on
my new passport for the same time because I had issued the visa for 5
years in the first case.

Hi Tanmay,

 

My passport expired in March 2010 and I have my H4 visa on my passport valid till Sept 2010. It is perfectly fine. When you get your passport renewed, all the valid visas on your old passport remain valid. You just need to carry both passports. I have travelled to Canada with both passports. There is no problem. Chill.

Interesting. Why would they give 5 year visa for a 2 year program?

Hi

There might have been a policy change. So everyone might get a visa
for this long.
Again, you cant work on this visa, it is F1. Just in case you do some
other course after wards.

Hey Tanmay,

My visa got approved. Interview was smooth. They didn't check any of my admission letter or certificates or financial documents. They just checked passport, I-20, Sevis Receipt and HDFC fee receipt. Following questions were asked:-

1. Why did you select Purdue?
2. Who will sponsor your education?
3. What does your father do?
4. Did you have any backlogs during your engineering course?
5. How long have you been working for Infosys?

Not sure about the duration of the visa as I've not got back my passport. They said I'll receive it within 3 working days.
