Carrie Viola Harper Taylor married James Monroe Purcell

I found this story written for Good Old Days magazine some years back.
It was originally sent to me by Marge Cathcart who was, I believe,
Carrie & James Purcell's daughter. I would love to hear from Marge -
or someone in her family who has taken up genealogy or may have access
to information she gathered over the years. I believe she may have
passed on.

However, the spirit of Carrie V. T. Purcell deserves recognition. She
was one tough cookie and given what she endured (read the story), she
is fortunate to have met and married James Monroe Purcell, my great
uncle.

By the way, there are given names mentioned in Carrie's account of her
life that may assist in tracking your Purcell family. Be sure to take
notes as you read.

Carrie must have had some musical talent as she copywrited The Kansas
Sunflower March in 1932:

The Kansas Sunflower March deserves preservation. Does anyone have a
copy stored away somewhere? Purcell Family of America should adopt the
March as our organizational marching music!

I really enjoyed this article. I have printed it out and will enjoy
it again. James Monroe Purcell was the name of one of my great great
uncles, I do not know if it is the one she is married to or not, but I
remember a James Monroe and a Carrie in my Purcell family in my early
childhood. Haven't heard of a Marge Cathcart though but of course she
may have been called something beside Marge. Thanks for sharing it.
Even if they are not my branch of the Purcell tree story was certainly
worth the read. She had to endure a lot as a child...glad to know
that it was a Purcell family that rescued her from it.

Blair, I'm posting Part 1 of Carrie's account in the April issue.  I've quoted you in part.  This is what I wrote as an introduction:

The following story was discovered by PFofA Web Administrator Blair Purcell.  It was written for Good Old Days magazine and sent to him by Marge Cathcart, who may have been the author Carrie Purcell’s daughter. Blair writes:

Also I wrote an email to the Allen County Historical Society in Iola KS to ask if they have a copy of the KS Sunflower March in their archives.  We'll see.

I had hoped to be able to insert copies of the original magazine pages with their artwork but it would not print out very clearly.  Perhaps someone with more talent with photos than I have could have sharpened it up.  I need to take a course and am looking for one locally.  Meanwhile, I just re-typed it.  I'm going to run it in two parts, just as it was done in the magazine.
