Dear Friends of Puptown,

As you may know, the City of Chicago is considering an ordinance requiring all non-breeding pets in the City of Chicago to be spayed or neutered.

From our point of view as dog park users and friends of Puptown, the proposed ordinance would make things much easier and some of us would like to show our support of the ordinance.  If you are interested in adding your name to the letter below, send me an email at in...@puptown.org.

We will also discuss this issue at tonight's quarterly meeting (7:00 p.m. in the Margate Field House).

Best Regards,
John Lenti

Honorable Alderman Burke
121 North LaSalle Street
Room 302
Chicago, IL 60602

Dear Alderman Burke,

Chicago dog-friendly areas in general and Puptown at Margate Park in particular are crowded. Introduce an intact dog to a crowded dog park and the atmosphere becomes absolutely chaotic. We have noted a sharp increase in complaints about dog fights in our park and believe we must do all we can to eliminate them. The Pet Overpopulation and Safety Ordinance would help us achieve this goal.

The City of Chicago already acknowledges that special precautions are  required when visiting dog parks and has instituted a set of rules that includes being up to date on immunization shots, including bordetella or  "kennel cough," which spreads in crowded environments. The vaccination is required in most boarding and daycare centers as well.

If we acknowledge that crowded environments need special precautions to protect the health of the dog and their handlers, shouldn't spaying or neutering be considered a reasonable precaution?

The undersigned volunteers of Puptown support the spay/neuter ordinance and extend our support. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help it succeed. We also suggest that at a minimum, dogs who visit the city's dog friendly areas be neutered.

Sincerely,
Friends of Puptown
