I've been working on a few things (puppet server upgrade, dns changes, we had an outage)

Any suggestions where I should look first?

I"m tracking it down to puppetdb failing to start (and continue to run):
# journalctl -f -u puppetdb
puppetdb.service: Control process exited, code=exited status=1

I ended up disabling puppetdb. I can work without it.
