file_line + filebucket?

Where appropriate, I enjoy using file_line to edit files from the puppetlabs/stdlib module, but I would like to keep a copy of the file before it gets changed by file_line. Is there a way to have file_line use the filebucket in the same way files controlled with the 'file' type do?

the way that the file_line type is currently implemented, I don't
believe that this is possible, no.

Have you checked if there is a feature request for that yet? (Puppetlabs
modules are managed in Jira, right?)
If not, feel free to add one yourself.
