Dear Pupil Community,

We are excited to announce two big updates.

  • New Hardware - Binocular and high speed Pupil hardware is now available!
  • New Website - We just launched our new and improved website - https://pupil-labs.com

New Hardware

Over the past couple of years, we have received requests for a variety of custom hardware setups or modifications to Pupil hardware. Based on these requests, we have decided to leverage Pupil's modular design. Based on these requests, we have decided to leverage Pupil's modular design such that there is no longer just Pupil Pro and Pupil Dev. It is now a configurable platform that will simply be called Pupil.

The second big hardware update is the addition of custom made world and eye cameras designed by Pupil Labs. The new world camera is considerably smaller, lighter, comes with exchangeable lenses, and can record 720p footage at 60fps. The new eye camera captures the the high speed of 120fps, a crucial requirement for many fields of research.

With the new options and our online configurator, you can build the headset you require for your research. For example, you can configure Pupil for egocentric vision research with a high speed camera and no eye camera. Similarly, Pupil can be configured for pupillometry without scene information with monocular or binocular eye cameras and no world camera. Check out all the possible configurations on the website -- https://pupil-labs.com/store

For those of you with an existing Pupil Pro headset, we made an upgrade kit so that you can add 120fps eye capture to your headset (no tools required.)

New Website - https://pupil-labs.com

With the addition of new hardware, and based on feedback from the community, we found that Pupil had outgrown the old website.

We will be adding more features and content to the site in the following weeks. Let us know what you think (or if you spot any typos/bugs :)

Excellent, glorious news guys! Congratulations!

ps.:

What you mean by "egocentric vision research"???

Hello,

I ordered a binocular frame and two Microsoft LifeCam HD-6000 based on the DIY BOM that's provided on the website.

I hadn't checked the fps for this camera when I placed the order on Amazon and looking it up now it appears to be only 30fps.

I'm mostly interested in eye behavior/health tracking (convergence insufficiency, slow focusing, etc). Will 30fps be enough to get any kind of reliable data?

Is there an alternative off the shelf webcam that could be used instead of the HD-6000 that has a much higher frame rate? I can't afford € 450 X 2 for a binocular setup with the custom 120fps Pupil Labs camera, is there any off-the-shelf camera for under $100 that would fit the pupil binocular frame and offer 120fps?

This is for personal use and I don't need it to be robust. I'm only tracking my own eye problems.

Thanks,

 Lex

The website does look amazingly better! Congrats!

@Rafael, AFAIK, egocentric vision is a field in Computer Vision research that focus on first-person videos. Google Glass is probably the most famous device for egocentric vision.

Hi Lex,

I guess it depends on what kind of data you need. The 30 fps camera may be enough if you don't need highly accurate information about the fixations, or things like microsaccades.

We have used the PlayStation Eye camera (for PlayStation 3) in our lab some time ago as an affordable 120 fps camera (I've looked up at Amazon now and you can get one for about $10). The problem is that even if you disassemble it it will still be kinda bulky...

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi all!

Thank you for the feedback. We're glad you like the site!

Adding to what Andrew has already said. The lack of any useful 120fps or even 60fps camera lead us to go make our own camera. Outside Playstation Eye there is no alternative and the playstation EYE is really to bulky + the lens is kind of useless.  I don't know how uvc compliant it is but there are ways to make it work.

Best,

Moritz

I am afraid to say that my last try with playstation EYE was unsuccessful, some commits ago.

What about something like the OV7725? It's pretty cheap and available at many online stores. The spec says it does 60fps. There are a lot of products built ontop of the OV7725.

Would this work?

ebay link :

Adjustable frame

5 fps、10 fps、15 fps、20 fps、25 fps、30 fps

If the information is correct, I would prefer the microsoft hd-6000 with auto focus.

The only alternative is for someone that have the know-how to assemble a cheaper and compatible UVC camera. For example, Pupil uses Zeiss lenses, but other lenses could do the job. For example,

http://scholar.harvard.edu/mdorr/publications/open-source-low-cost-eye-tracking-system-portable-real-time-and-offline-tracking

Accordingly with that alternative low-cost eye tracking paper, they spend 270 EUROS (3 years ago) on each camera with fair specifications.

Hope this helps,
Best

That info is probably wrong.

Here is another ebay listing, this one concurs with the manufacturer spec regarding 60fps:

640X480 MJPEG@ 60fps

An affordable version of the pupil system for personal use would be great.

Hi

So, it is research that does not require (in principle) the eye camera.

Now I am guessing... pupil is already excellent for:

for eye tracking and egocentric vision research

but could be much improved for e.t. OR e.v.r.

Just an interpretation.

Love this project,

Rafael
