Mark's a guy I just met today. He's a recycler, once of those scruffy
guys who pushes a shopping cart through the neighborhood looking for
bottles and cans to exchange for cash. I never before would have
thought to start a conversation with one of those guys, except that
I'd just been to visit the Davis Street transfer station, and trash
was on my mind.
A few days ago, walking down the street, I came across a huge mass of
plastic bottle caps strewn across the sidewalk. What the heck was
going on? I couldn't figure it out. Then, Michael guessed that one
of those guys who picks through peoples' recycling to take the bottles
probably took off the caps and left them on the sidewalk. So when I
saw Mark (I didn't know his name at the time) pushing his clanking
shopping cart, I asked him about the bottle caps.
Turns out, it wasn't he who did it. Where he takes his bottles, they
accept the caps, and he likes to leave them on because they add to the
weight and get him more money. We had a very nice conversation as we
walked down the street, he picking up bottles and I picking up stray
caps and other miscellaneous bits of plastic. Anyway, he seems like a
reasonably responsible guy, so he can have the bottles on my street.
I'll still pick up the rest of the plastic.
