I have been wanting to write this for a long time now but wanted to be absolutely sure before I went ahead with this thread / post.

When we talk of the Punto, we mainly talk of the following (not in the same order):
  • Looks
  • Handling
  • Road Manners
  • Built Quality & Safety
  • Ride Quality & Suspension setup
  • Fuel Efficiency
One area (which I think) has been least discussed and stressed upon is Punto's braking. Fortunately, I get to drive a variety of cars (ranging from SUV's to small cars) so I have some benchmark for comparison. I must say, Punto's braking is definitely one of the best in it's class (and better than some cars above its class).

Last week, a friend of mine (who is interested in buying the Punto and is waiting for the VGT) took my car for a drive in the city. The first thing that impressed him was the braking. That is when I started observing Punto's braking abilities a little more closely. Till then I was taking it for granted !! Off late, I saw some posts on TBHP where owners have praised Punto for it's high speed braking capabilities.

0-100 times are a "favourite" past time for many so called "enthusiasts". But most don't care about the 100-0 timing. I am pretty darn sure, if there was to be some run where 100-0 times for hatchbacks was to be tested (that is their braking ability), Punto would come out on top. I can for sure claim that Punto's braking is definitely better than the Vista, i20 and Figo. Don't know about other hatchbacks.

If any of you have had any experience where you have been impressed by the braking capabilities of the Punto, feel free to share them here :)

Ok, I don't have much exp with car's. Last I owned/drove was way back
in 2002 (Esteem and Indica V2). Sometime back I was coming back from a
beach in Konkan. The road was awesome tarmac and low traffic and
twisties. I asked my friend to use my handycam and start shooting the
twisties driving. I don't know the speed but would be easily around
80, when I enter a wide left hander. The road was very wide and it
wasn't difficult to stick to your lane. The moment I was able to see
the exit, I was planning to accelerate hard (was in 4th), suddenly I
see a cow crossing the road. Would be not too far away. I jump on the
brake and steer the car to right (no traffic and right = behind the
cow). To our surprise the car didn't loose any of its stability and in
a second or so, we were safely past the cow. And this all is recorded
in the camera too. :-)

Ok, here ABS might have helped but hey that's part of the car package.

Adding to that, I have TDed the Figo and Ritz top models. Figo was the first 1 i TDed after buying my punto. And the first shocker came to me as soon as i braked for the first time. I actually got a bit scared since there was so little response from the so called superior ABS brakes of the figo. I own the Active variant which hasnt got ABS+EBD n i can bet it has way better brakes....

Definitely the most precise brakes I have used so far. TDed the Figo
and felt the need for better brakes in it. My previous car, Siena 1.6
ELX had poor brakes . Better brake means lesser distance from the
vehicle ahead of us and easier overtaking :)...

Time and again punto has proven to be a wonderful hatch for me,
before punto the previous car that I used was a Volvo s40, also used
Honda accord before the Volvo, the reason I chose punto was that after
moving to Pune I totally subscribed to " in Pune u gotta use a hatch",
and punto was the only hatch that could be compared to the Volvo, from
amongst all the hatches available in sept2009. A man buys a Volvo for
safety the world over, and breaking is the spine on safety when it
comes to cars, our punto inspired the same driving confidence in me,
as that of Volvo. Gladly I met Amogh on tbhp, spoke with him at length
and finalized on the punto.

I respect my punto, and you?

Hi Amogh

I guess I had posted this before, but just because you are asking about the braking capabilities of Punto, I am writing this again. I had once driven from Bangalore to Tirunelveli earlier this year. The road is mostly 4-laned except for few stretches where we have to drive on the same side as opposite traffic.

It so happened that we were driving back to Bangalore and were on the Madurai city bypass. This 4-lane divided road was newly laid and we could save a cool 1~2 hours bypassing Madurai city. I was enjoying the drive and the road was absolutely without traffic. So i was driving at steady 120km/h on my e-pak Punto. I was following a swift who was also doing this speed consistently. At one point I noticed that he was slowing down.  I thought he was going to make a U-turn in the median ahead and moved to the left lane to go past him. Once I moved to the other lane, I realized that there is no road ahead of me and just a huge mound of ash color sand. Tbe road was incomplete and we are supposed to take the other lane. There was absolutely no warnings / road signs before this. I was doing 120 and we are just 20~25 feet before the mountain of sand. My wife who was sitting next to me in the front seat saw this first and started screaming. The moment I saw this, I just braked hard as a reflex action. The GT3s did make a screeching noise and for a moment in my mind was thinking that I am going to crash into the sand. But the Punto was rock solid and it came to a complete halt well before the sand without skidding or losing composure. Not even for a moment I felt losing control of the car. I didnot even had to reverse after stopping to take the other lane. I just causally turned the steering wheel to the right and proceeded as normal. I can still remember the face of the swift driver watching this with a horror expression.  With my earlier Santro Xing, I would have never survived this.

My wife was wearing a seatbelt and was ok. My 18 month old infant son was sleeping in his car seat behind and he was also fastened with seat belt. He didnot even wake up on this incident and continued to sleep. My 7 year old daughter was playing around without seatbelt and she fell down from the seat and had a few scratches. Now she fastens her seat belt promptly even for city drives.

Regards

Gopi

Punto braking is pretty impressive.

I braked heavily once when I was travelling towards tirupati when a
bumper appeared out of nowhere. I was doing around 80.

Car was stable in a straight line( i have abs), no skidding and
braking distance was short.

Amogh,

I do keep observing the braking whenever I am on the highway. I keep
testing the feel and sometimes wonder if it is normal or overservoed.
The bite is fantastic so much that I am sometimes scared whether it
will lock up in actual situation.
Feeling a braking in testing and slamming the brakes in actual is a
different ball game.Yesterday I did notice a bit of vulnerability
especially coming into a broken tarmac after exiting a corner at
speed.I There was that little skid that happened. (it could be normal
as broken tarmac would mean less of constant patch of road ) May be
such things wont happen with ABS. But a true braking ability of the
car is without ABS which gets further refined with ABS.
With this above exp, I guess fellow members can have it in their minds
while approaching such braking zones
That was my two cents.

No doubts Amogh... The breaking on the PUNTO can be compared to any of the premium cars... Infact i found it very similar to the WV Jetta...

I am a car buff... And have almost driven every brand of car and frankly speaking i find our Punto the best in its class.. Only thing i would like FIAT to get things better is with the interior plastic quality.. Others are all perfect...

I enjoy the brakes of my Linea. And I make it a point to mention the
superb braking abilities in each of my reviews after a highway drive.
Am not sure about Figo but I owned Ikon earlier (my favourite car
after Linea). The only sore point of Ikon is braking. It fails to come
to a screeching halt at critical moments when you need it the most.
1-2 times I got away with minor accidents & there are 3-4 times I got
saved but not due to braking efficiency but my superb driving control
(and I do take pride for my driving being a spirited driver !!). Is it
in Ford's DNA like superb steering/Ride/ Handling? I dunno, have not
checked Figo.

I wrote abt the brakes few months ago when in delhi due to these very brakes I not only saved the entire frontal of GP from damage but also saved severe physical damage to  people in Innova. I was abt to bang in an Innova not noticing that it had actually slowed. Sure in my old maruti ZEN I would have travelled into innova.

I absolutely agree on this... during the couple of long drives i have
been on there has been cases where i had few close calls and if it
were not for the punto's brakes it would have been bad!!

Its really awesome.

I am shuddering to imagine how it would be in the night to come up at
an incomplete road
I had a similar experience on the NICE expressway from Bangalore to
Mysore. There too the road was really flattering and i was at top
speed in my santro Xing. It is actually very difficult to discern that
there is no road ahead. It launches on you suddenly out of nowhere. I
agree with you Gopi. This was a few years ago.

Hi Abdul

Even now in the NICE expressway, there is a incomplete stretch before you could join Bannerghatta road when driving from Hosur road (Courtesy, our ex prime minister Mr.H.D.Deva Gowda). Regulars who drive here will know the incomplete road and would watch for it to turn. But people who are new to this road would definitely falter here. This is a dream highway which enables us to do 140+ speeds easily. But this single stretch of about 2 kms has been playing spoil sport for regular users since the last 3 years.

I read in the newspaper that an SUV flew off an incomplete bridge in Chennai last week and the driver managed to escape unhurt. That must have been one hell of a ride for him.

Regards

Gopi

My bad experience with puntos excellent brakes . I had posted some time back about the accident i had . there were 3 cars infront of me which creashed into each other . I managed to stop before crashing into the car ahead of me . But the cars behind me were not Puntos , unfortunately and so they didnt stop and banged my car from behind pushing my car onto the cars ahead of me ..... good brakes .. just a bad day i guess

Legally, the ones behind were you at fault. No matter what the situation, according to the law, the person hitting from behind is at fault.

So Punto helped you stay on the right side of the law :)

That jump of the bridge and him surviving was a miracle . He missed
landing on the OH traction wires. He could have got charred. It was
like a circus incident.

Let me tell all.
Without ABS, any car, be it punto or anything else, will skid in a
panic braking even at 20kmph !!. Thats why ABS helps. For lesser
mortals we have to brake ACTIVELY.:))

In Pune atleast, people have a habit of suddenly stopping a car in front of you (probably to turn right or left) without giving any indication, appearing midway on the road from roadside bushes, cutting the lane and appearing in front of you suddenly and coming from the wrong side of the road. My worry is, punto can stop suddenly in such an event but the vehicle behind me may not. Driving is always a very tension-some experience atleast in pune.

Thats how people drive in India. The common man's easy explanation of Chaos Theory is the driving habits of Indians.

Amogh, I am not sure if I told you about this incident (Sanjeev knows
about it).

Few weeks back I was driving to office. Going towards Vashi all the 3
lanes were blocked by slow moving traffic so I downshifted , changed
into the gravel lane to the left of the left most lane and zoomed. I
was probably touching 80 when ahead a huge container truck came out
from a gap in the road. This gap is between the old bridge and the new
bridge. Many trucks are parked ahead of the defunct old bridge and
take the drit track to turn onto the highway and get on the new
bridge. As soon as i saw the truck I kept my hand on the horn and
braked hard. Do note I was on gravel and dust.

Without losing composure the car lost speed drastically and I stopped
inches away from the truck. My left side would have probably banged
into the truck if the car hadn't stopped. I was unruffled inside the
heavy insulation inside the Punto keeps all outside chaos out. The
engine switched off when I came to a halt as I didn't get the gear
clutch co-ordination right. I simply turned off the stereo and ACC and
switched the engine back on and drove off. At that moment, I didn't
realise the gravity of the situation. Driving ahead and thinking about
it, I realised what a close call it was.

No doubt, any car with ABS would have saved me. I was on gravel and
dust, any non-ABS car would have skidded but the speed with which
Punto came to a halt still impresses me. No doubt, the brakes saved
the car and me that day. I had a new found respect for the vehicle.

People can fault Fiat with anything but technically you can't fault
them for a mechanically flawless product that connects with you on a
level that Asian cars can't.

Yes, i remember, you told me about the incident.

You were fortunate that day, otherwise if the ABS & solid build of
Punto were not there with you, one can imagine the damage it would
have caused.

NO doubt that FIAT cars are far superior technically from the current
cars availble in the market.

Good to know that you came out unscathed. Just to let everyone know
that from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-lock_braking_system :

On loose surfaces like gravel and snow-on-pavement, it(ABS) can
slightly increase braking distance while still improving vehicle
control.
