My Grande Punto-D is about 6 month old. Last week completed servicing of my car from Prerna Motor, Bangalore. Wheel alignment was a part of the first services. Currently I am noticing that while crossing speed breakers ( @ 5-10 kmph) some sound/noise from front wheel/suspension of the car. The sound is something like compressed air is released somewhere from front wheels. The noise is not like a thud.

Is it a normal behavior of the suspension or something went wrong when wheel alignment is done. I am yet to speak to the service guys, am planning to talk to them on Monday.

Farouque ,

It could also be the compression air release noise of the shock
absorbers.

There was some problem with Link Rods in initial lot of Linea's and
Punto's. That was corrected in later production but it would help to
check that out. Do take it to your service center. What I have
observed is that the Tata-Fiat service guys are quite friendly and
ever ready to help. The informal atmosphere at these ASC's works
better then the more formal atmosphere at Maruti ones. (I have a SX4
and Punto.)

Hi Amit

Thanks for the information. I have spoken to Tata-Fiat delearship in Bangalore. They asked me to take the car to the service centre and they will do the needful.

Thanks

Amit,

I want to know if any of you have faced this clunking noise from the
front right suspension. I have had it twice in six months and it was
kind of scary to rip again on the highway after hearing that. During
that phase it repeats if I furce it to go over a folded road
bump..etc. I got down and looked underneath, kicked the wheel but
dindt hear anything loose. It happens when the suspension bottoms

Once it happened while reaching my office . The service centre is just
3 km away. I called up concorde and gingerly drove it to the SC. Test
driven and nothing could be noticed. I had read about this funny
noise in a complaint by a UK customer who had his suspension taken
apart and refixed by the SC and they found nothing wrong , but the
customer would hear it once in a while. I wonder if Fiat knows
anything about this . I am waiting for the camp in chennai Mar 6 and
7.

Hi,

I had a similar problem from the front left. When the sound comes I could feel a slight shake at the steering wheel. Because of this I used to notice the sound faster than the co passenger.
Finally it was diagnosed to a loose ball joint which they tightened and that resolved the issue.

Hi all,

I am having a similar problem in my 2 week old FGP, from the rear,
probably left side. While crossing medium height Pune speed-breakers,
my front wheels cross real smooth but then I hear a 'thud' from the
rear side. At first I thought its the tool kit that was kept loose but
even after moving it to the rear seat to test, I still hear the sound.
The spare wheel is not loose & I am a bit worried. I will check with
Service team this weekend & I am driving extra careful till then, but
I would like to ask fellow FGPians if anyone found / solved similar
sound from rear of FGP.

(BTW, 'FGPians' is ok or is there any specific clan name to be used?)

Regards,
Sujith

Thanks,
Naveen

I dont remember where i said this...
but the rear does make a thud noise if you go over a bump fast..

try taking that same bump slow..

Its the suspension trying to keep 100% contact with the road if it
feels the wheel is in the air.. it just drops it down till there is
contact.. I guess its the roll bars working there..

For me it generally happens when I climb the wadala bridge (going to 5
gardens) fast, mantain the same high speed and the descend comes. at
the joint of the bridge that turns down; most of the times I feel the
rear wheels (esp the left wheel, right one stays on road due to driver
weight + RHS car body weight including the Steering and exhaust
weight) take off for a second, thats where the suspension drops the
wheel back to the road.. with the thud, which is also heard on the
speed beakers.

Its normal.

Any other rattle apart from this from the rear should be a concern.

Rear side thud sound on speed breaker is normal.
Actually, Punto suspension is hard on less speed and becomes better with speed.

No worries.

Hey,

That thud noise is normal. It is the highly compressed long travel
coil spring releasing suddenly to keep contact with the road at all
times.Enjoy, just an aberration that gives you enjoyable ride on all
surfaces at other times

Thanks to all for clearing the doubt, I was checking the spare wheel
today & found that, though its secured tight, you can actually lift it
a bit from any side - it makes a small thud when dropped.
Yes, there is no sound when its slow enough.

Even i have same problem of the rear thud sound if i speed through a
breaker.
I have 1.3 MJD.
I now understand that its normal. I was worried too.

Other source of the THUD could be from the ToolKit/Jack bag. It is
tied to the inside of the boot by Velcro strip. Make sure it is tied
well. The kit is heavy and it could be the culprit too.
