Hi guys,
I came across this web page:  http://www.tuninglinx.com/html/fiat-grande-punto-22.html. This is Page 22 of a long write up on the Punto. This talks of the different gearboxes used on the 75 bhp 1.3 MJD and the 90 bhp 1.3 MJD. There is a difference in the torque handling (21 kgm to 23 kgm). I am not quite sure if our Desi Punto has this gear box. Pete'ing the Punto will increase the original 75bhp and 190Nm torque to  90bhp of power and 215Nm of torque (as per Pete's web page). If the Desi Punto has this gear box, then Pete'ing it will exceed the rated torque value. So I wonder whether it will be a wise thing to do. Will welcome more views on this subject.

do it johnny...
i did it on mine 15k kilometers ago and u dont know what fun it is to drive a peted punto...will put up a detailed writeup on it in a couple of days...
also u'll need a k&n or a green cotton or whatever else is available in the market...
i'm running a stock tuned petes box and will be shifting over to stage 1 the next weekend or so..
i was also wondering if a gbox swap would help improve the driving pleasure...the swift box was a slick little bastard

Hi Mandeep,
I am sure that it must be really great having  that extra power on hand. However, after reading the article on 'tuninglinx, I am not convinced whether the gearbox can handle the extra torque. As I recollect, the initial DICOR Safari had a derated engine to cater for the gear box. Anyway, will look forward to your write up.

Hey johnny
I used to drive a stock.swift earlier. I peted it at 168000 kilometers when my clutch plates were still stock but at lands end. They lasted a good 6k kilometers after the peteing and that too when I'd driven the crap out of them. The gearboxes of todays car will take a lot of abuse before giving up the ghost. If you start going through forums, 99 percent of them are going to be full of pessimists. So just follow your heart and Pete your car if you want to. I'm sure you won't regret it.

The gear box that we have in the punto/Linea is the one that came with
the palio to India years back. (even the spare part serial number for
the gear box is the same from the palio at the SC)

Now Fiat India has done minor tweaking (small modifications) to the
gear box to work with the new FIRE, MJD engines...

Why did they have to keep the 6 speed back in Italy. At least a option
for us Indians would have not hurt them...

BTW, during the camp, a source revealed that Fiat India's R&D team was
struggling to extract even 76bhp (after lots of trial and adjustments
to engine) from the FGT 1.3 MJD cuurently in the punto on the current
5 speed palio gear box. i guess another reason for the delay in
launches... punto, now the t-jet delay!!!

So as for the MJD, pete'd punto's, only time will tell the life of the
Indian gear box.

OK Mandeep thanks for the 'encouragement'. Will re-think. Will also get back to you if I take the plunge.

Hi Mandeep , your input will be highly appreciated because i too want
to pete my punto and will do in week or two , also how racechip link -
http://www.racechip.de/RaceChip-Quality-10i.html will fare as it is
much cheaper than pete box.

And are there options in petes box for stage 1 or stage 2.

I have covered 24K and everthing is absolutely fine but little more
power would be better.

Thanks CHA0S. You have clarified the basic doubt that I had - can the gearbox handle the extra torque.
