nginx+punjab loadbalanced proxy issues

I'm trying to setup a configuration for a load balanced punjab/Bosh configuration as outlined here:  http://thetofu.livejournal.com/71339.html

My current configuration is:

Server1:  XMPP host, punjab1
Server2: punjab2
Server3: punjab3


If I hit my nginx proxy set only for Server 1 the connections work flawlessly.  However, if I set the proxy to use only server2 or server3 the connections do not complete.  I can see the that the connection is being passed from nginx to punjab on server2.  I can also see where the startTLS connection negotiations begin on the xmpp server.   What I'm not seeing is why the connection does not work when using the servers that just run punjab as the connection manager?

I've attached the logs and any ideas would be helpful.
