The teaser of Mumbai Saga will release on Wednesday, Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Tuesday. He also revealed that the film starring John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles, will hit the screens on March 19, this year. "Mumbai Saga release date + teaser tomorrow... Mumbai Saga - which teams John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi for the first time - to release in cinemas on 19 March 2021...The gangster drama is set in 1980s and 1990s...Directed by Sanjay Gupta," he tweeted. John Abraham plays a gangster in the film, while Emraan Hashmi stars as a cop.
Mumbai Saga director Sanjay Gupta described the project as his "most ambitious film."Mumbai Saga, which also stars Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Prateik Babbar, Gulshan Grover, Rohit Roy, and Amole Gupte in pivotal roles, is set in the Eighties and the Nineties. In June 2019, Sanjay Gupta shared a picture of the film's cast on social media and he wrote: "The legend of Bombay, the saga of Mumbai. Presenting the gangsters of Mumbai Saga."
The film was earlier scheduled for a June 2020 release but the production work was put on halt due to the coronavirus outbreak and nation-wide lockdown, last year.Mumbai Saga has been produced by Bhushan and Krishan Kumar under their banner T-Series.
In Mumbai, at one point in time, there were 250000 mill workers. This was the biggest Union in one industry in one city in the world. With liberalization, there was a change in rules that the mill land could be sold, with certain provisions. It is said that industrialist Sunit Khatau wanted to sell his land, and he sought the help of gangster turned politician Arun Gawli to infiltrate mill workers with dummy workers who would give consent for the land sale. Fearing that this deal would give Arun Gawli enormous money power, an audacious murder of Sunit Khatau was carried out by rival gangster Amar Naik.
This backdrop has been chosen by film-maker Sanjay Gupta to make the movie Mumbai saga. The movie was not a success, and though it was made with a budget of 50 crores, it made just 23 crores or so at the box office.
The maker; Sanjay Gupta has made several gangster movies earlier, prominent amongst which are Shootout at Wadala, and Shootout at Lokhandwala. His movies often have Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, and John Abraham as stars. Mumbai Saga too has John Abraham and Suniel Shetty has an interesting cameo.
Why was the movie not a commercial success? In my view, it is because there is nothing new about the four main characters, a power-hungry politician, a mafia-lord who runs his empire from prison, a new upcoming mafia-don who takes him on, and a smart inspector who swears to take him down. The audience has seen it umpteen times, and the current audience, demands novelty and new plots/themes since content is king.
