Hi all CXOs of leading rails companies in Pune,
I hope most of us are familiar with each other by now :) Those who
aren't please introduce yourselves. I have included a broad audience
(of those I know). Please circulate this other interested 'decision-
makers' in Pune.
We did some brainstorming inhouse at Josh and came up with some ideas
that our team suggested would be good learning topics at Rails
meetup.
To put that into effect, we can raise the bar for Pune Rails Meetup#3
and take some technical sessions ( basic and advanced). People are
expected to come with their laptops configured with Rails.
Please add to this list of topics! Remember - basic topics attract
young talent. We need to shortlist these topics and we can probably
get feedback from the Pune Rails Meetup FB page itself. Anthony? We
then need to finalize the comprehensive topic list - maybe get some
voting on the topics from Rubyists.
Ruby:
1. Ruby meta-programing (advanced)
2. Regular Expressions in Ruby (basic)
3. forking using spork (advanced)
4. Ruby threads (basic)
Rails:
1. polymorphic associations & STI (basic)
2. writing a rails plugin (advanced)
3. Social networking connects - authentication & sharing via openIDs
(basic)
4. DelayedJob (basic)
5. Ruby event machine / nanite / RabbitMQ (advanced)
The plan of action:
1. We can pool in some funds (or get some sponsors) and host this
event at PYC, deccan. Please let us know if anyone is a member there.
Satish Talim (in CC) is a member and we can organize some event there.
2. We need to fix a date for this event.
Please let me know if you are interested in organizing this along with
Anthony and me.
Regards,
Gautam
I think we should be clear, and differentiate, between two things:
1 community building, interactions, networking, etc
2 tutorials, coaching, hands-on 'stuff'
It would probably be cool if we could do both - either alternatingly,
or mixed - at the PRMs. Would be interested to hear what people think
about this in general, or maybe what their past experiences are (maybe
with other groups). One other thing I'd like to get out of this is to
show and learn what we each do in our respective rails practices.
Maybe not exactly RMM (http://www.railsmaturitymodels.com/), but
surely amongst us practicioners, there's lots to be shared!
Independent on that, I think it would be interesting to explore things
with RubyConf in mind - should we do a meetup before RubyConf (end
March)? If we could - it could potentially facilitate, or strengthen,
the getting together of a group of Pune-ites to go to RubyConf
together. Maybe we rent a bus - or even better, a Coach of a Train
(since it's on Rails - pun intended) to Bangalore.
I'd be cool to have the next PRM more technical and Hand's on - which
requires the audience to be more prepared, as you mentioned, Gautam.
If we can do that, we can have a mixture of 'interactive' technical
sessions or live programming sessions, or maybe also have showdowns of
teams competing against each other to solve some SMALL problem in an
elegant way - not a 'hackfest' as such, but a small mini-version of
that?
Maybe we can even have some sort of routine whereby every PRM,
someone
- presents some 'new stuff'
- (two parties) presents some sort of things like plugins (e.g.
Paperclip vs. Attachment_Fu. Or Delayed Job vs. ...).
- some sort of discussion about something (like a showdown)
Just a thought - if we can get some sort of 'structure' or 'routine'
done.
I think Gautam's list of topics is cool and interesting - is there
somewhere we can do an easy poll maybe at some point?

One person has commented regarding BDD using cucumber.
RMM is definitely an interesting topic and I like the idea of a
showdown.
If we really want to follow a standard structure -- lets schedule a
Rails meet up: first Saturday of every month at 5.30pm or so. What do
you think?
This will help us get our act together. FYI, Josh has also become an
Engine Yard Associate partner and we can get good sponsorship from
them - not goodies etc. etc. but things like promo codes for Cloud
Solo demos and live apps. They are willing to sponsor for meetups and
help the organization.
Maybe we can get more traction if we setup on meetup.com -- cost 10$ a
month (lets see if I can get EY to pay for a years subscription or
something).

Gautam
