I recently switched to Elementary OS from a Fedora/Windows 7 dual boot. I have Geary set up with my gmail account and I really like it. I'm trying to set it up with my university email as well, but I can't seem to get it to work. The university website gave these instructions for setting up unsupported webmail clients ( ):

I have this email set up on the gmail app on my phone and I used none as the security type, so I've tried using none of the encryption settings and I've tried removing the @domain.ca from the username but neither of those seem to fix my issue.

I'm not talking about the functionality of Thunderbird, as that hasn't changed much over the years. This is all about the interface and I've started seeing the open-source email client UI as a bit long in the tooth.

Because of that, I set out to find a different client to serve my needs. For this, I'm currently considering two different email clients: Geary and Bluemail. I've used both in the past but not as serious contenders to take the place of Thunderbird. This time around, I want to find out which of the two can serve me as Thunderbird has for so many years.

Geary is a Linux-only, open-source email client that has been around since 2012. I first met Geary when I was using Elementary OS as my primary operating system. At the time, I found Geary to have a pleasant-enough interface but it lacked a lot of the features I depended on. These days, I don't require so many features for my email client (such as GPG support). What I require now is just the means to manage my email. I want something simple with an interface that doesn't look like I'm still back in the early 2000s.

One very nice thing about Geary is that, if you've already configured a Gmail account in your online settings of your distribution, it will automatically pick that up and your Gmail account will be ready out of the box. To add another account, click the three-dot menu at the top right of the left sidebar. When prompted, type your name and email address and click Next. Geary does a very good job of picking up the server address but if it's wrong, you'll need to type the correct URL. Add your password, click Save, and you're good to go.

Although I've found Geary to be a very pleasant email client, it does one thing that I don't believe I can abide by. You see, when you click to open an email, instead of that email opening in a reading pane (or a new window altogether), the email takes up the entire window. That means not only can you not delete multiple emails, it means you have to commit to reading the email before you can go back and preview any other emails.

For me, that's just inefficient and it also means that I'll probably not stick with Geary. That's a shame because I really enjoy the simplicity and modernity of the Geary email client. And although this might not be a deal-breaker for you, it probably is for me.

Having very very recently started using Geary, one thing I notice is it sometimes seems that mail check is a bit slow. Well short of downloading the codebase and inspecting, I can't see an obvious thing to configure how often the server is queried for new messages. This is quite atypical behavior in mail clients (to me). I'd appreciate any insight before I start.

I've never used an aggregate, centralized mail program. I always assumed that all your accounts being downloaded to your disk (or are these apps in cloud?), just by the nature of that system, would be sluggish sometimes.
Unless I have that all wrong.
Always wanted to try. There must be an upside in terms of efficiency. How you liking it?

Ok, I have my answer, Geary maintains an IMAP connection which is checked for connectivity every minute. The IMAP connection signals a state change to the client, which then initiates a message download if the state change is that new mail has arrived.
So...my question was wrong...but that's how it works (documented if someone wants to know later). Please solve/close.

Obviously the font in use
Browsers use different fonts, depending on their default (browser) font and on the web page browsing.
I suggest you check which font is used in Chrome and try to use it (or a similar) in your system app in question (depends on toolkit used, GTK, QT, etc).
Either default Chrome font, or the one in Gmail web page (using dev tools).

I am using Geary in Gnome in Arch Linux. I cannot get spell check to get in Geary. All I see is an empty list in the spell check window. Evolution also said I don't have a dictionary installed. I wonder what dictionary I should install in order for the spell check to work for these mail clients?

Geary supports spell-checking your composed email in one or morelanguages, as you type. To enable spell-checking, first ensure yourcomputer has spell-check dictionaries installed for the desiredlanguages. Consult your computer's help to determine how to installdictionaries if not present.

Once you open Protonmail Bridge from the Activities menu (in the top left) you will see the screen below. From here, enter your username and password that you using to sign into the ProtonMail website.

Click on the arrow to the left of your username and then click on the Mailbox Configuration button to open the Email Settings window. This window will have your password (which is different then your ProtonmMail password), port numbers for IMAP and SMTP, as well as the security method for both IMAP and SMTP.

To add a GMail account, simply select GMail from the Service account type list, and type in your GMail email address and password. Note that you may need to adjust your Google settings per the FAQ: _Google.2BIBk-s_2-Step_authentication

Geary Mail is a free open source desktop email client developed by the Gnome project. The default mail client for Elementary OS, Pantheon Mail, is a fork of Geary. If you are looking for an alternative to thunderbird, then give Geary Mail a try. This tutorial is going to show you how to install Geary on Ubuntu.

Anyhow, I have never used an email client and intrigued with using Geary!
When signing in, it asks for my email ID and password...
Is it safe to enter my password into Geary? Won't that be sent to Geary servers which can later get hacked?
Also, in Settings, there's an option to connect to "online accounts" like Gmail and Outlook? What does that do? Should I connect [read: is it safe?]?

P.S: I know what you might be thinking! Doesn't this guy have an email app on his phone? Why does he trust that? Well, I use the Gmail app for Gmail accounts and the outlook app for Microsoft accounts because I guess it's their apps, and I am using their services. This is my first time using a third-party email client, which is why I am a bit worried!

Obviously, the userid/password combo is required to access to your email. You do want to access your email right? I rather doubt that Geary sends your credentials anywhere but the server it's configured to access, but it IS open-source and you can verify that by auditing the code and compiling your own copy.
I also assume you know that every server you access will have your credentials somewhere and that your access to Google and MS services are multi-server: access/account verifications, side-server (dispensing HTML elements, ads, etc), resource server (email). You will NOT be able to determine what they do with that, since it is NOT open source and basically will be what most benefits the company.
So...in summary, your counter example isn't much of a difference really. If this bothers you, then don't do email or setup your own email server under your own control. Otherwise, not a pertinent issue. Pick your battles to die on.

The thing is, if you already use Gmail or Outlook, and if the companies want to spy on your mails, then they can already do that. No need to have the user use their specific email clients. So in my understanding, if you are using Gmail, then it's okay to use it with the Gmail email client - if you understand what you mean!

Now, with using a third-party email client is the fact that you are typing in your password into it. And I am not tech-savvy enough to understand the source code and how it operates! So maybe the password can get hacked while it's getting transferred to the Microsoft server. This is why I was asking the community if it's safe or not! Whether they know the email client is sketchy or things like that! Any bad name - you get the picture!

It's an email application under the GNOME project that has been tailored for the GNOME desktop (not limited to), with support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols that allow it to integrate neatly with most webmail services.

When we last looked at Geary, it had a different conversation list layout. But now, the redesigned conversation list just makes the mail reading experience so much better.

Setting up a Geary is as simple as it can possibly get. If you entered your name at the time of installation or by going into Account Details on System Settings, the first time you open Geary your name will be filled and you will only to select your e-mail provider, put your e-mail address, password and Geary will handle the rest.
