Hi y'all,

so Ruth and I went to the PSA today to learn that the class had once again been canceled. As it is tomorrow. As it has been on Tuesdays for the past month.
I think it is time to re-evaluate, perhaps we need to catch the hint. The PSA is making very little accommodation for us to use their space; and it's up to us to decide how we want to proceed. As of now, Monday night is the only working night. Is this acceptable to us?

One student today was saying, that if the classes cannot be held consistently here, we should let him know so that he can make other arrangements to take an English class. I sympathize with him; it doesn't do our students much good to have to deal with the PSA's up and down schedule, let alone our own planning and time etc.

I think it's time to re-evaluate.
Perhaps we can meet as a group and think this through!

All the best,
Abena

Hi all,

I just developed a cold yesterday, and I don't think I'll be up to teaching tonight.

Would anyone be available to teach in my place? If need be, I could send you a lesson plan.

Please let me know!

Hi everyone,

I just spoke to Athie in order to confirm whether the PSA will allow us to hold class today. The answer is yes. The class is on for tonight, so hopefully, I'll see you there, Ruth!

We should however meet, and begin exploring other spaces in order to hold the English classes. Restoration Plaza in Bed-Stuy on Fulton St. is one place; the Fort Greene Senior Center on Fulton/Classon is another option; any other ideas? let's brainstorm and then perhaps we can begin contacting these organizations systematically. What do people think?

All the best,
Abena

Thanks for checking into it Abena!
I am coming tonight, but I am going out of town for the following two Tuesdays, so can anyone cover?
I also need to let everyone know that I'm planning on moving out of town at the end of August so I won't be around for class next year. Sorry all!

So the troubles continued last night when I arrived at 9 to access the PSA. The key was missing. One of the family upstairs came down to open and was able to open the gate but not unlock the door, she called her father and was told that the key should be in the PSA door, if not, it is missing. So the four students who were gathered and I were not able to hold the classes. Fairly frustrating. I told the students about our search to find another space; and asked them to think about it and if they have any suggestions to let us know. Whoever is teaching tonight, please let us know what happens!
many thanks

Hi everyone,
I'm sorry to hear about the continuing issue of the PSA space. I agree that it's time for a change of venue!
One option I heard about was the mosque near Fulton and Washington, another offer I got was in the basement of Hafiz travel across the street from PSA (kind of small but could be a temporary solution.
I heard from some students that there are English classes being taught next door from Hafiz travel (look for a blue door), at 7pm and 8pm certain week nights. This could be worth investigating!
Thanks for your concerted time and effort. I know the students appreciate us if not the association its self.
Best,
Oona

Hi Ruth,

I can definitely cover for you next Tuesday, July 12, and maybe July 19. I'll confirm in about a week about July 19.

Also, Ramadan commences on Aug 1 and ends around Aug 29. We usually don't hold classes during Ramadan. We might want to use this time to figure out an alternate space where we can recommence classes. I don't have any suggestions at the moment for new spaces, but I'm willing to help with contacting any relevant management authorities at places that you all think may be suitable.

I will be out of the country from Aug 9 to Sep 10, so if we could find a time to meet during the first week of Aug, that would be great. If this does not work out, I'll gather updates when I get back!

Feel better Ruth!
