Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild 2021 Virtual Symposium - online & free this year
Unity for Bees!: Beekeeping in the communityThis year, the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild Symposium will focus on what beekeeping can mean to our urban community. What does it mean to be a beekeeper in the city? What purpose can beekeeping serve for the health and diversity of our community, and how can we accomplish this?
As an introduction, we will hear about how one of our youngest beekeepers got started: 9th grader Philly Lily will present her own experience with beekeeping in Philadelphia.
We will then have a panel discussion on how beekeepers function within the community - and what we hope to see develop as our community evolves.
Participants will include:
- Wynnetta Ward: political coordinator and union president, CWA 13000; gardener and beekeeper
dedicated to diversity in beekeeping and education on the importance of honeybees
- Don Shump: Owner of Philadelphia Bee Company, providing education and bee products from
urban apiaries, past president of the Bee Guild, bee beard extraordinaire
- Jenny Ko: architect; beekeeper harvesting honey for Elwood Restaurant, supporting local
culinary endeavor with her Fishtown hives and interest in local food and flora
