Spanglish 2.0

Amy Armstrong and Fernando González [Duo Dorado] have updated their highly successful and enjoyed recent Spanglish into Spanglish 2.0 while away from our town for a brief vacation. The 'working while resting' paid off. Amy looks terrific with beautiful styled hair, makeup and that smile. Fernando remains a handsome guy with a mean guitar. Dealing with their different first languages, they mix and bounce back and forth at times. The background maintains the Latin rhythm and mood.

Fernando has selected well-respected musicians from his Piel Canela with Luis Rascón Pantoja on his violonchelo [cello] and cajón and Alberto "Mimi" Ramirez extremely talented with his Spanish or electric guitar. Mateo, the youngest member of her band, joined them on stage. It was revealed that he was Fernando's son and they could not get a babysitter. The sombrero-topped youngster sat and watched the activities. In addition to a multi-instrument musician, Luis is a music teacher.

As the title infers, songs are presented in Spanish and English mashups. Fernando often opens the song in his birth language, then Amy transfers the tune into English. The highlights of tonight are when during a song, Fernando and Amy sing in harmonious Spanish. Many of these tunes were hits in the Latino community and hearing them in Spanish widens the appeal and knowledge of the particular composition.

Amy opened this evening displaying her joy "I'm so happy. Really, I am!" She sang the classic "I Will Survive". The lyrics expressed one's ability to conquer life's adversities most appropriate in coping with her own illness and the overall pandemic and she meant every word: "You think I'd crumble? You think I'd lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive."

Coupled with the beautiful singing and musicianship, Amy's show urges the audience to 'take a comic trip trhrough her mind', not an easy feat. One look from her induces giggles throughout the room. No person or subject is target-proof. The band trio is allowed to shine forth with their Latino guitar rhythm and drum or cajón beat before an enthusiastic crowd while Amy glows in their sound.

Amy has a talent where she can tackle a song, learn it, rehearse it and make it her very own, with touches here, there and everywhere. Calling upon Frankie Valli, the group performed "Can't Take My Eyes Off You": "At long last, love has arrived and I thank God I'm alive." Verging into a strong song from Sting was "Shape of My Heart", a favorite of Amy's. Luis solo'd with his cello demonstrating his ability to add to a composition in his own style.

The band and vocalists knocked out of the venue "Without Love" The Doobie Brothers. While listening, it is amazing that a song heard for decades in an American pop/rock manner is transposed into new meanings when presented in Latin interpretation. Stevie Wonder is another artist covered on the Latin charts successfully. Luis Miguel's "Blame it on the Boogie" ["Será que no me Amas"] entranced music lovers of many countries.

New superstar in the making, Billie Eilish, was covered with "Bad Guy". A stirring duet performance "Shallow" positioned Amy singing in English while Fernando lent his part in Spanish. It was a tour de force, an Oscar winner, one which will be remembered and cherished for a long time. The Beatles were chosen since the entire world knows their songs. Best-known and loved is "Yesterday" and Amy emotionally conveyed sad lost love. Her vocals were superb and clear.

The evening reached its finale. The 80s are back in fashion, so she asked why not do Donna Summer, Queen of the Disco? Blazing energy erupted in "She Works Hard for the Money", sung mostly in Spanish: "Ella trabaja duro por el dinero." She wants that dinero.

"Have a wonderful time in Puerto Vallarta", Amy called out and bring your friends back for more musical and comic entertainment.
