Thaipusam is celebrated during the full moon of the 10th month in the Hindu calendar. It is normally held in the last week of January or the beginning of February, depending on the alignment of the sun, moon and planets. Thiruvidaimarudur Sri Mahalinga Swamy Temple is one of the Panchakrosha Sthalas.The presiding Deity is Mahalinga (Great Linga) because Siva worshipped Himself.

 

Also Called as Booloka Kailasam, Mahalingaswamy temple has four Raja gopurams and three small gopurams inside.Trial run of the newly constructed car of the Sri Mahalingaswamy temple at Thiruvidaimaruthur near Kumbakonam was held on Thursday last month. The run is a prelude to the car festival to be conducted on January 19  , next week on the day of Thaipusam, which was last held in 1933. It is a very big Temple Car like Thiruvarur Thyagaraja Temple Car.
