Want to make a standout first impression at events, meetings and more? Create business cards that you can confidently hand out to new customers and prospects. Pass them around at events to introduce yourself and your business, or add them to goodie bags, folders and more.

Creating a set of business cards is one thing, but collating them for quick proofreading or even supplying them to a print provider can be a little mind-boggling. In this example workflow, I'll show you how this can be set up once with automated crop marks and edited easily in the future.

You'll need to have your business card artwork created in a separate InDesign file, one design on each page. In my example file, I created 15 card designs at 85mm x 55mm, and a bleed of 3mm. I also included a single page for the reverse design that all of the business cards would use, a white logo on a coloured background.

Next, create a new InDesign document, here I used A3 portrait, turn off facing pages checkbox and set the margins to 10mm. This provides a slim border within which your separate card designs will be positioned and at 10mm this should be enough of a border to print proof from without losing any content. Naturally, you could choose A4 or a leger page size providing your locally connected printer can accommodate.

Head to the Layers panel and rename the default Layer-1 to Designs and then add a second layer named Trim marks. Make the Designs layer active and then switch to the Rectangle Frame Tool (Press F) and then left-click over the Image Window. From the dialogue that appears enter a width that matches the overall size of your business card INCLUDING the bleed. For my 85mm x 55mm business card with 3mm of bleed that comes to 91mm x 61mm, click OK to generate the frame. Click on the Trim marks layer to make it active, then press M to make the Rectangle Tool. Left-click over the Image Window and set the with and height of the rectangle to match your business card size once trimmed, in my case 85mm x 55mm. Click OK to generate the rectangle. I then removed the strike appearance and set the fill to Cyan with a tint of 15% to fade the colour. This step isn't necessary, it just makes it easier to discern each frame from one another.

Align both rectangles centrally to one another and then position them both in the top-left corner of the margin. This will allow you to better judge how many copies you will be able to fit on the page.

With both shapes still selected, go to Edit> Step and Repeat (CMD+Option+U) or (Ctrl+Alt_U). Set Horizontal Offset to at least the overall size of your business card including bleed, in my case that would be 91mm, but if there is a little room available you can always increase that value slightly to separate the copies farther apart. Then increase the number of copies in the Count field to suit your page with, for A3 that worked out as 2. Click OK and then select all shapes. Then go back to Edit> Step and Repeat. Set the Vertical Offset to at least the height of your business card including bleed, in my case 61mm. But again, if space permits, increase the gap accordingly, I set the Vertical Offset to 67mm and set the Horizontal Offset to 0. Then increase the Count, on A3 this equated to 5 that could be comfortably added. Click OK to apply the edit.

Deselect all shapes and then turn off the Designs layer visibility. Then select all remaining shapes that are visible, which should be the pale blue rectangles in the Trim Guide layer. Go to Window> Utilities> Scripts. Expand open the Application-samples-Applescript folders to reveal a script named Crop Marks. Double left-click on the script name to launch it and from the dialogue box, turn off the Registration checkbox and make sure that Draw Marks Around Each Object is active. Click OK to add the crop marks. It will no doubt take a few seconds to add all of the crop marks in a new layer named CropMarksLayer. Lock the CropMarksLayer to prevent those tiny crop marks from wandering around your document by accident. Turn off the visibility of the Trim Guides layer and turn on the Designs layer visibility.

Go to File> Place, browse to the folder containing the InDesign file of business card designs. Turn on the Show Import Options checkbox and press Open. When the dialogue appears, choose which pages you wish to import from the file, set the Crop to dropdown to Bleed bounding box and click OK. Hover your loaded cursor over the first placeholder frame and left-click on it to deposit the artwork, which will appear at 100% scale, matching your rectangle size perfectly (providing you got the sizes right). Use the same technique to fill the remaining frames. When you want to edit the design, simply right-click on one of the frames containing a design and choose Edit Original from the context menu. Job Done!

It is worth noting that not all business card sizes are the same. If you're looking for a reference on business card sizes NE14 Designs has a great blog post covering the geographical variations. Adobe Express has a business card design generator if you're looking to try out some design ideas. If you're looking for free stock content then Adobe Stock has numerous templates included with your Creative Cloud membership. We also cover tutorials on stationery in our InDesign Introduction courses.

With QRCodeChimp, you can create a your QR Code Business Card (vCard Plus) for free. All you need to do is visit the QR code business card generator page and add the information that you want to display.

People need to scan your vCard Plus QR code and click on 'Save to Contacts' on the display page. Android users can open the VCF file to save the contact, while iOS users can select the Create New Contact option to save it.

A QR code can't completely replace a traditional business card's tactile and personal touch. However, adding your virtual card QR code to your business card can significantly enhance its functionality and connectivity, making it a superior networking tool.

Use Colors and DesignsGo beyond black-and-white QR codes and add flavor to your QR codes with the help of colors and designs. Use creative designs and colors to make your vCard Plus QR code unique and attractive.

Include a Logo or PictureAdding a logo to your QR code can differentiate it from others and take your branding to the next level. If you want a vCard Plus QR code for a personal profile, you can use your image as a logo.

Include a Strong CTAAdding a CTA to a QR code can boost its scan rate significantly. Though QR codes are meant to be scanned, adding a clear CTA telling people what they need to do can go a long way in getting more scans.

I've been exploring digital business cards lately. Seems to me that they can be great for marketing and sales; you can track interactions with potential clients, and integrate the collected data with your customer relationship management (CRM) system (at least some solutions offer this as an option). Or use them to share promotional materials, or provide quick access to product catalogs, social media profiles, or customer testimonials. A special bonus in my book is that they are environmentally friendly, reducing paper waste.
