Do we need publishers?

Actually if a manuscript is well written, then you don't really need a publisher. All that is required is a book seller like Amazon, whom I would assume have links with efficient typesetters.
But how many manuscripts are well written? At least in academic publishing, very few. Editors have to extensively rework these. In such cases, as they say, a book is as good as the author and the editor.
