You've just welcomed your first guests for your annual holiday party. As you usher them into your living room, Wanda, the wife of your very best customer, looks down to her feet. Your eyes follow hers - and you are mortified. Right there, on the carpet you decided didn't need cleaning until after the first of the year, is - we hate to say it - a stain. You thought no one would notice it in the soft lighting you've chosen for the evening. And, you were wrong.
Ack! We don't want this to happen to you, either. So, let's review a few guidelines (other than a stain, that is, which makes it obvious) to help you decide if your carpets cleaning needs done before the holidays.
First, ask yourself a few questions:
> Do you have pets? How many? Generally, the more pets and the bigger they are, the more often carpets cleaning needs done. We suggest every three to six months.
> Does anyone living in the house suffer from allergies? If so, we suggest you clean your carpets two to three times a year.
> How many people live in the home? Do people wear shoes in the house? If there is a lot of foot traffic, chances are there are wear patterns that will develop, if the carpet is soiled. Do you have children who do a lot of running around? Again, three to six months.
> How often do you vacuum the carpet? The better care the carpet receives between cleanings, the less often it needs to be cleaned. We suggest vacuuming at least twice a week.
> Are there smokers in the house? If so, we suggest cleaning your carpets every three to six months.
So, here's the bottom line: If you live by yourself, you probably need to clean your carpets just once a year. But if you have pets, children or if you smoke, we think cleaning them every three to six months is a good idea. If, on the other hand, your flooring includes wood or tile that gets heavy traffic, this would alleviate the stress on the carpet, making less frequent cleanings advisable.
It's also important to know what your carpet's warranty requires: one cleaning per year, two? Find out. And, it's important to know that each of your carpets might need to be cleaned differently, depending on how each is made. A cheaper carpet, for example, should not be cleaned as often as a more expensive one; it just can't handle being handled like more expensive carpeting can.
So, do Wanda, and yourself, a favor. Consider cleaning those carpets before the holiday season to give you, your family and your guests the best possible chance of enjoying a happy holiday season. Dogs, kids, smoke, allergies and all that dancing you do on the weekends could be taking their toll - and leaving a lasting impression.
