Not many know this but it pays to book Grand Canyon airplane tours now if you plan to fly in 2014.

For me, it sounded impossible to plan a trip to Las Vegas or Arizona that far in advance. I'm so spur of the moment. But I did it last year and the savings were huge.

Here's why?

Generally speaking, peak season at the Grand Canyon ended October 15. And with it, rates. I've compared prices from peak to now and their substantial.

In some cases, tickets were up to $75 cheaper per person depending on the plane tour you pick. That's a lot of money if there's two or more of you flying.

Now here's the cool thing: Purchase your 2014 spring or summer tour now at the discounted winter rates and you've pretty much beat the system.

Will tour operators change the rate on you once the first warm days appear on the horizon? No. It's unethical and I've never heard of anyone that I've worked with doing this.

Thus I say get your trip now while the "getting" is good.

Some travelers have asked me, "What happens if I cancel my tour?" Good news. If you do it within 24 hours of your scheduled departure, you get all your money back.

The follow up question is: "What happens if there's bad weather?" More good news: You get a full refund or you get rescheduled on the next available flight.

Not a bad deal at all if you ask me.

Grand Canyon airplane tours take off from Las Vegas and Tusayan, AZ. They will be available throughout the entire holiday season including Christmas and New Years (helicopters will not fly on Christmas).

Vegas flights go to the West Rim and the South Rim. You can do an aerial or landing tour at both, though you have more options at the West Rim.

On the other hand, if you want to visit the South Rim from Vegas, the plane, in my opinion is the only way to go because it takes only 60 minutes to get there.

At the South Rim, there's a really decent air tour that covers nearly all of the National Park. Personally, I think it's one of the better and more affordable options if you have just a day to check out the Park.

Quick overview of Vegas airplane tours to the West Rim. These flights are really neat, especially the one that lets you optionally include the Skywalk because I think you need to see the glass bridge first before you do it.

Then there's another that lets you take a heli from the top to the bottom. It comes with a boat ride, too, which I've found to be quite wonderful during the winter months.

Speaking of winter, please dress accordingly. It's common for Vegas visitors to show up a tad under-prepared. I suggest you dress in long pants, running shoes, a jacket and a hat. Not a bad idea to bring sunglasses and ChapStick, either.

Conclusion

The best time to buy Grand Canyon airplane tour tickets is now during winter if you plan to fly anytime in 2014, especially spring and summer. Prices are significantly cheaper and you'll save a bundle. And that's a good thing!
