If you have a pallet rack system in your warehouse, ask yourself one simple question: when was the last time you have it inspected? Chances are there are some business owners who simply dont know the answer. There are likely others that know and recognize it was a long time ago. Whatever the reason for the time lapse is essentially irrelevant, though. The important thing to realize is having your pallet rack system inspected on a routine basis is necessary, for a number of reasons.
Unfortunately, Mistakes Do Happen
Pallet rack systems are among the most popular storage systems for warehouse operations in the United States, as they offer bulk storage capabilities and relatively easy access to loads via the use of forklifts, pallet trucks, and other industrial vehicles. However, using powered material handling equipment in tight spaces, particularly in warehouse settings with pallet rack systems, leads to the possibility of mishaps. Even if you have highly trained forklift operators and take added precautions of installing post protectors and other collision-reducing accessories to your pallet rack system, damage to your storage system still can occur relatively easily. Minor dings can easily be repaired, but if they go unnoticed or are left unattended, the problem can escalate.
Another common mistake is overloading a bay on a pallet rack system. Doing this can seriously compromise the structural integrity of the entire racking system, and could potentially lead to the system buckling. The last thing business owners want to see is their goods incur damage because of a faulty storage system, but routinely inspecting your pallet rack system to look for signs of overloading can help prevent that from happening.
Keep Your Employees Safe
Employee safety should be a top priority of every business owner, and extra precautions should always be taken to ensure a safe workplace is maintained. Having your pallet rack system inspected on a regular basis certainly falls into the category of safe work practices. Taking the time to inspect individual bays to ensure palletized loads are resting properly along cross beams and making sure all connections are securely fastened need to be done in order to help prevent putting employees in harms way.
Not Required By Law, But Still Should Be Done
Businesses in the United States are not required by law to have their pallet rack systems routinely inspected, unlike in the United Kingdom, where the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires such measures to be taken. However, the diligent and routine inspection of pallet racking is a practice that should most certainly be followed.
How often to have the pallet rack system inspected is up to the discretion of the owner, but annual inspections of new pallet racking systems are considered an acceptable timeline to follow. If you have a used pallet rack system, a six-month timeframe would be a more suitable schedule to adhere to. All inspections performed should be documented and retained among the companys files.
Where to Go for a Pallet Rack Inspection
It is essential to always have someone who has the proper training and expertise inspect your pallet rack system so that you can ensure your storage systems structural integrity has not been compromised. That persons qualification should include knowledge of the 1997 Rack Manufacturers Institute Specification for the Design, Testing, and Utilization of Industrial Steel Storage Racks. Most reputable pallet rack dealers have qualified professionals on staff who have the ability to perform pallet rack inspections.
