Google PageRank has generated a lot of interest and talk regarding how it affects the listing of a websites as well as what can be done to improve their listing. Anybody can now see the ranking of any website online since the page rank has been incorporated in the Google toolbar. However, the question is, how does it work?
To find out the Page Rank of any given website, Google developed an algorithm based on the number of websites linked to any given website, for example your website. Therefore the higher the number of links, the higher the Page Rank of your website. However, there are certain conditions as well as requirements that have to be met.
To establish the Page Rank of your website, the first thing that is put into account is the Page Rank of the websites that link to your website. It is more advantageous to you if the website linking to your website has a better ranking than your website since Google usually prefers websites that have higher Page Rank. In effect this automatically betters your websites page rank.
Therefore, if you intend to improve the page rank of your website, it is advisable to look for links whose websites have a much higher page rank than your website. On the other hand, it is not easy to get such link since no website with a high page rank would like to compromise its better page rank to a website that is hardly known.
Secondly, one-way inbound links carry more weight irrespective of their page rank than site reciprocal links. This is because there was time that Google regarded all links to be equal, but Google quickly realized that some unfair website owners started misusing the reciprocal links to inflate their page ranks.
Reciprocal links lost credibility when a lot of schemes sprung up facilitating link exchange. It was at this point that all links stopped being treated equally. Since then, one-way inbound links became more credible than the random reciprocal links. For this reason Google started penalizing those who artificially inflated their page ranks through reciprocal links.
On the other hand, you dont have to bother about being penalized by Google with one-way inbound links. As much as it is not easy to get high quality inbound links, you can easily get them only if you create unique and rich content on your website. Your website visitors will love your high quality content and Google will reward you with better page ranking. Apart from benefitting from Google, you will get the much needed inbound links from people who are impressed by your content and thus improving your page rank in the long run.
Finally, page rank alone cannot help you to accomplish top search engine rankings as valuable as it might be. There are several other factors that go into determining your ranking in Googles search pages. For that reason, it is essential to look at all other aspects in totality including page rank so as to have a complete search engine optimization.
