While public records including criminal records are available online,
not all the states allow access to these records online. Some states
ask for a written request to access these records. Some even ask for
the identification of the person, such as the name, date of birth,
address, and country of residence as well as the social security
number. Even if you do get this information, state records may not
contain the whole information and will only the criminal offenses
information pertaining to that particular state. Many states, keeping
the security for children in mind, provide free access to registries
containing the names of the sex offenders as well as child abuse
registries.
Companies are greatly benefited by checking the public criminal
records of a person, as it helps them weed out the negative elements
and ensure they have only good employees. In fact, many companies
consider this public record tool to be used as pre-employment
screening. Some companies, even if they have not done so earlier, if
they suspect an employee of doing something negative pertaining to the
company, have every right to check their information to safeguard
their interests.
Although, it is a good thing that most government offices now have a
presence online and they maintain these public records online for
people to see, not all the information is available. The US district
courts provide access to this information using online federal court
docket system. This information does not contain the identification of
the person concerned. These government records can be accessed any
time of the day or night.
However, at the national level, these criminal records can be obtained
without any government consent, either online or other sources by
paying a fee. These records are extremely easy to gain access to, by
sitting at the computer and the results are retrieved quite quickly
too.
