Near Here continues Paul Druecke’s use of historic plaques to contribute to the story of place. The project expands local lore by dislocating history while asserting the centrality of the plaque itself. Near Here continues Druecke’s use of bronze plaques
as sculptural interventions. Often overlooked, these markers embody questions of authority, communal value, and personal agency. Druecke’s pioneering work offers new perspectives on the social landscape. As part of his residency in Cleveland, Ohio, Druecke permanently placed two plaques on the facade of Spaces art center. The Near Here series is a collaboration with poet, Donna Stonecipher.

For his projects, Paul Druecke has solicited strangers door to door, christened a park and courtyard, rolled out the red carpet, been a benefactor, initiated a Board of Directors, and memorialized the act of memorialization. Druecke enacts subtle dramas of perpetual potential — at times celebratory, desperate, underwhelming, or all three. He has worked with the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne; Suburban, Chicago; Outpost for Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Green Gallery, Milwaukee; Many Mini Residency, Berlin; and the Contemporary Art Museum Houston among other venues. Druecke’s work has been featured in Camera Austria and InterReview, and written about in Artforum, Art in American, Artnet.com, and Metropolis.com. Druecke was a resident in Spaces World Artist Program in 2010 and received the 2010-2011 Mary L. Nohl Fellowship.

HABEAS LOUNGE is an environment created by Linda Pollack designed to foster and animate civic dialogue. Editions of HABEAS LOUNGE's have been installed in cities in the U.S. and abroad, addressing issues ranging from urban planning and constitutional democracy to economic bubbles.
