Hello all

Thanks to Jeff I have been introduced to the group

I am Tomas Diez, I run the Fab Lab Barcelona in Spain, located inside the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia

We just launched a Kickstarter campaign about our Smart Citizen project: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/acrobotic/the-smart-citizen-kit-crowdsourced-environmental-m?ref=live

It is based in Open Source hardware and software tools for the participation of the people in the production of information in the city. The Kit is arduino based, extendable, hackable and maybe useful for your endeavours

It would be great if you can help us to spread the word

Also, we are open for any collaboration in relation with the project

cheers

Tomas

Tomas,

I work with Safecast, and we're getting into adding air quality monitoring to our efforts on radiation monitoring.  I'm interested in knowing how you're calibrating the instruments?

Thanks!

Tomas

Hi Levi

at the moment we are doing no pre-calibration, the intention is to do it through the platform, but first we want to identify ranges of the sensors, we will only know when we have a decent amount of devices online, hopefully around 180 in Barcelona within a month

at the same time we are starting collaborations with local institutions with expertise in the field, it seems to be a quite deep field the issue with calibration, I guess you know

Any news on how you went about calibrating the sensors, Tomas?

Best

Hi Alastair

nothing new so far, we made soft calibration methods by using a high end reference sensor and then making our own curves to extrapolate sensor values. Good news is that it lead us to a mostly possible online calibration tool development, which we think might be the best option for anyone to do its own calibration. Another option is to used official weather station as reference for online calibration. Challenge is to have only one curve per sensor and not one single curve for all as we tested before. Now we are posting kOhm values on both NO2 and CO

Any ideas on this? We are also looking to release a "premium" version using Alpha Sense sensors, which will probably double the price of the kit, but are just ideas we are discussing

Now we are doing more work on get more stability in the platform, future plans are to rewrite the entire database and improve the performance of the site
