Here are the links to images taken during this outing, feel free to click through and sort a few! The best images can be stitched together into new maps.
The low altitude vegetation images from the edge of the canal have not been uploaded yet.

Hello Balloon Mappers,
We will be doing balloon mapping of sites around the the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn this weekend - Saturday, July 7th and Sunday July 8th, rain or shine.
We will be using our new happy red weather balloon from Grassroots Mapping and helium kindly provided by Liberty Industrial Gases. Because of windy weather conditions we had been using kites, and look forward to finally using the helium.
We are hoping to start early because of the heat, and will be meeting at the Gowanus Canal Conservancy Salt Lot at 2nd Avenue and 5th Street next to the Gowanus Canal.
We will be needing a minimum of 5 people for handling the canoe and getting balloon over bridges.
I will have a minimum of 3 canoes available for people wanting to explore the Canal and photograph our mapping operations
Some of the mapping will be on land and some on the water. This is a tentative list of the general sites we are hoping to cover:
SATURDAY
8 AM:
Low altitude vegetation mapping of the Salt Lot Strip with Gena. We will be testing cameras to identify plant species.
9 AM:
balloon mapping of the
170 8th Street Marylander site with Eymund. We will be taking a high resolution photographic record of the lot to see if cracks or settling in concrete of the old Chemical / Textile Works site give clues to burial trenches of War of Independence soldiers.
11 AM
southern section of the Canal to it's mouth past the Gowanus Expressway. We will be using canoes to photograph the Canal edges all the way down to the Amerada Hess site at the mouth of the Canal.
This will include a land based excursion to the intersection of Smith Street and Halleck Street to capture imagery of the potential Superfund Gowanus Canal sludge processing site (the Quadrozzi cement site next to the old Grain terminals at the end of Henry Street.)
(tentative) depending on time and heat exhaustion:
4 PM
Thomas Greene Park. We will be walking the balloon around Thomas Greene Park and Degraw Street to get good base photography for Gowanus by Design's Waterworks design competition.
5 PM
Brooklyn Coffin Factory site on Union Street. This is the site proposed for the 17,000 ft2
Gowanus Shuffleboard roof garden, and the site is expected to generate community discussion over the coming months.
SUNDAY
9 AM
Thomas Greene Park should heat prove too much on Saturday afternoon.
10 AM
Butler Street Area at head of Canal, site of the DEP's Flushing Tunnel new Pump Station. The Flushing Tunnel is expected to bring millions of gallons of fresh water into the Canal by Spring 2013. The head of the Canal is also expected to get a 6% INCREASE in sewage overflows under the City's shuffling of sewer pipes, planned to reduce overall sewage into the Canal by 34%. We would like to better understand pipe configurations to avoid the sewage increase. Better aerials of these blocks can help.
12 PM
Bayside Fuel Depot at Union Street Bridge. A fascinating example of spontaneous revegetation of an abandoned urban lot.
1 PM
Brooklyn Coffin Factory Shuffleboard site
2 PM
Carroll Street Bridge at Gowanus Canal. Lots on either side of this site are being proposed for redevelopment (residential proposal for a reactivation of Toll Brother's site, and First Street basin / Figliolia Plumbing Building "Africa Israel" redevelopment)
3 PM
Cold Beers at 439 Sackett Street.
I posted some draft Gowanus Aerial Mapping slides to give an overview of the fun stuff happening around the Gowanus Canal, and the kind of issues the aerial photography explore.
Please let me know if you are interested in being part of the crews on any of the above site outings. There is the possibility of running a second balloon, but this will depend on getting an extra gas helium tank.
Best
Eymund
