Hello

Great work.

A few questions about DIY Spectrometry KIT
  • Could the camera be old/low resolution?
  • Could the "lens" be from a cd not from a DVD?
Thank you

Hugo

Hi, Hugo - on this thread: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/publiclaboratory/0rgjNU9SOFg

we're trying to compile common questions (and answers) into this wiki page: http://publiclaboratory.org/wiki/spectrometer-faq

Would you be able to help compile these? I cleaned up that page a bit already. As to your questions:

  • Could the camera be old/low resolution?
Sure -- Spectral Workbench is only recording in 640x480 right now, but we hope to increase to 1280x720 soon. But even 640x480 gives you 640 lines of resolution (if your spectrum fills the whole image). And that's pretty good already -- probably better than our grating and slit allow.

  • Could the "lens" be from a cd not from a DVD?
Yes, we started with CDs, there's another good conversation about this here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/publiclaboratory/c8imxTzOBu8

Thanks!
Jeff

Thank you

Hugo
