Oakland Residents Comes Together for Peace
Oakland, Ca  - March 21, 2010 -  On April 11th, from 3:00-6:00pm, the community of Oakland is coming together for peace; learning what each of us can do to help make the City of Oakland a safe place to “live, work, play, and thrive free from crime and the fear of crime.”  We will be celebrating with youth performances, Special Guest Speaker, City Council Woman Jean Quan and a special video message from our new Chief of Police, Anthony Batts. The purpose of this event is to reduce violence in Oakland by raising awareness, getting citizens involved and raising funds to provide Nonviolent Communication training for local social workers.  The event is being held at the First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St. (at 27th).

The two hour program will include performances by very talented Oakland youth; rapping, dancing and acting out skits about conflict. City Council Woman Jean Quan will be sharing about what the City is doing to reduce violence, and how residents can get involved with the Community Policing and Neighborhood Watch programs.  Attendees will learn specific actions they can take to reduce conflict in their homes, their communities and in the world. There will also be a special video message to the youth from Oakland Police Chief Batts.

After the event, the Exhibit Hall is a great place to learn about local services and pick up information about Neighborhood Watch and Community Policing programs, Domestic Violence Services, Oakland Police Department’s new Strategic Plan, and a wide variety of youth programs. 30 Nonprofits and local businesses are offering finger foods at every table and hosting a variety of activities.  There is an Empathic Listening Corner, a Letter Writing Station (where people can write letters to City, State and Federal legislators), and a variety of activities specifically geared toward youth ages 13-25.
Nonprofits participating in the event include Youth Tennis Advantage, BayNVC, Youth Uprising, Youth Radio, Juma Ventures, Brighter Beginnings, Attitudinal Healing Connection, Alameda County Family Justice Center, The Peace Alliance and more!  Come join us in making Oakland a safe place to live and thrive.
