Is this possible? The approaches I've tried haven't worked?

Make a new event with whatever settings you like for trigger and event type.
Set the action to "Create Profile." Click the "Options" button, and select a
profile name. Then, in the reference field, type in the dbase value of that
field you want to use in the reference.
For example, if I wanted to include the contact name, I would use this
expression in the reference field:
contact1->contact
The format is:
database->fieldname
You can find a list of table structures in your manual. There is a chapter
called "Database Structures" that would be helpful in this situation.

I have tested this in version 4.00.9922 (the latest release build of 4.0)
and it works just fine on my machines. Please reread this post and retry
the procedure, as I'm sure it works.

Click (File | Automated Processes | Setup processes) and select your process
from the drop down menu. Now edit the properties of your event, or make a
new
event by right clicking and selecting "New." Now in the action section,
pull the menu down and choose "Create Profile." Now when you click the
"Options" button, you can specify which profile to create.
Now I understood the issue to be that you would like the reference field of
this profile you are creating to be the value of a field in the contact
record. If this is not correct, please repost the issue.
If this is what you wanted, then all you have to do is type the dbase name
for the field you wish to include. For example, if you want to include the
contact's name, you would type the following into the reference field:
contact1->contact
It is in the format of:
database->fieldname
It will most likely only work for contact1 and contact2 fields.
